Notes: Abstract Experimental measurements are reported of the conductance decay following current interruption of wall stabilised arcs in air, nitrogen, argon, oxygen and helium within the current range 6–42 A. The results are compared with the predictions of several analytical models so that the influence of various gas properties and processes may be estimated. Measurements in the molecular gases show clearly how the arc structure affects the recovery. The results in the inert gases differ to some extent from the predictions of the simple models.

Notes: Abstract An analytical model is proposed which describes the general transient behaviour of a cylindrical arc column subjected to the influence of a self generated radial convection. The model, in conjunction with data for real gases, yields a criterion for assessing the importance of radial convection in various transient arcs, and allows the influence of a variable diffusivity to be determined. In the case of a freely recovering column, having a constant diffusivity within its electrical conduction zone, the radial convection merely modifies the column time constant, whereas for a variable diffusivity the column decay becomes non exponential at later times during the recovery.

Notes: Summary The syntheses of 4,4′-biphenyl tetrazonium chloride monohydrate, of 1,1′-di-(3-nitrophenyl)-3,3′-dimethyl-5,5′-(4,4′-biphenylene)-diformazan, and of yellow tetrazolium [2,2′-di-(3-nitrophenyl)-5,5′-dimethyl-3,3′-(4,4′-biphenylene)-ditetrazolium chloride] are described. Solutions of the pure formazan in pyridine absorb visible light maximally at 455 nm; ε455 is 54,050. Yellow tetrazolium has been specifically designed to meet the requirement of a new technique in quantitative cytochemistry, which involves the consecutive use of two bistetrazolium salts on the same tissue section.

Notes: Abstract Earlier studies have demonstrated convincing correlations between the distribution patterns of chiasmata and of U-type exchanges within bivalents. On the basis of this evidence and other considerations it has been proposed that these contrasting meiotic exchange events are related in origin, and that U-type exchanges, giving rise to bridge and fragment configurations, arise as errors in crossing-over and chiasma formation. This hypothesis is given further consideration in the present report and further correlated distributions of chiasmata and U-type exchanges are presented. These correlations involve the distribution patterns of exchanges between bivalents and between the two arns of one particular bivalent which is consistently marked by the presence of localised neocentric activity. The relationships of these exchange distributions to chromosome length are also investigated and as a result it becomes clear that a mutual dependence of the two types of exchange on chromosome length cannot account for the observed correlations. The total evidence relating to the hypothesis of a causal connection between chiasmata and U-type exchanges is reviewed and critically assessed.

Notes: PTFE rods, 0.6-3.8 cm diameter, were burnt from the top downwards in a gently rising atmosphere of oxygen. The burning was only possible in concentrated oxygen, or at elevated temperature or pressure. At its surface temperature of 920 ± 25°K, the polymer evolved monomeric C2F4 which oxidized in a surrounding gas flame; 15-35% of all the carbon in the gas was found present as monomer just above the larger rods. Depolymerization of the solid was not its only mode of decomposition, however. The heat radiated and conducted from the flame into the condensed phase was too little to depolymerize it completely, and heterogeneous reactions with species from the gas phase must also have contributed to the decomposition. Overall, the polymer burnt in O2, but the gaseous reactant which attacked the surface need not have been O2 or O in all cases, for these rare species just above the larger rods. Elemental fluorine was present in the gas even when elemental oxygen was absent, and calculations indicate that F atoms would be a major flame species at equilibrium. It is possible that heterogeneous attack by flame generated F atoms consumed part of the polymer and also supplied energy to help depolymerize the rest.
