Notes: The Law Commission is currently scrutinising the legal liability of manufacturers and sellers of consumer goods under the English law of sale, and it may possibly recommend reform of the existing law to provide greater protection for consumers. A convenient means of assessing the effect and scope of such proposals will be to compare them with the doctrines of current American “products liability law.” These doctrines have subjected sellers of consumer products in America to a strict liability towards their consumers in respect of defective products. This article is intended to be a survey and analysis of the different causes of action provided by American law. It will be necessary to distinguish the different features and origins of each doctrine since the principles of products liability law have been evolved from case to case by the American state courts in a manner which calls to mind the remark of Holmes that “it is the merit of the common law that it decides the cases first and determines the principle afterwards.”

Notes: Abstract The influence of ausforming on the methods of tensile and impact fracture in a low alloy steel, has been studied. The ausforming produced austenite grains elongated parallel to the rolling direction and on subsequent quenching and tempering between 400 and 600° C, extensive networks of cementite particles formed along their boundaries. In this condition tensile failure occurred by the formation of longitudinal cracks along the prior austenite boundaries and these cracks joined together by transverse ductile tearing. On tempering above 600° C the boundary carbides coalesced and the matrix softened, and in this condition the steel possessed considerable resistance to transverse crack propagation.

Notes: Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis have been employed to study the effect on the thermal degradation pattern in static air of the molecular weight of poly(m-aminostyrene) homopolymers and copolymers with styrene. Related substituted styrene polymers and copolymers with styrene have also been studied in order to assess the effect of introduction of amino, substituted amino, and hydroxy groupings into a polystyrene main chain. The effect of these groupings on the thermal stability of the polymers as compared with polystyrene suggests that the inherent antioxidant characteristics of the subtituent grouping plays the major role in stabilization. A molecular weight effect has been shown to be operative for m-aminostyrene, p-N,N-dimethylaminostyrene, and m-hydroxystyrene polymers. This manifests itself in terms of different thermograms rather than by significantly influencing the procedural decomposition temperatures, although a trend is seen.

Notes: The effect of the extent of degradation of poly(m-aminostyrene) on the quantity and composition of the residue and the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the fraction volatile at pyrolysis temperature are discussed. The behavior of poly(m-aminostyrene) is compared to that of polystyrene; a significant difference has been found for the behavior of the residue from poly(m-aminostyrene), which is ascribed to a crosslinking reaction involving the amino substituent. Mechanisms to acount for the observed products of degradation have been suggested and are discussed. Relative thermal stability studies have also been made and compared with results from polystyrene.

Notes: The products obtained on degradation of poly(m-aminostyrene) in vacuo are described. The effect of molecular weight and pyrolysis temperature are discussed and the behavior of poly(m-aminostyrene) compared with that of polystyrene. Quantitative analytical methods using ultra-violet spectroscopy and gas liquid chromatography are described for m-aminostyrene and m-toluidine. The possible mechanisms of degradation to yield the products are discussed.

Notes: The effect of temperature on intracellular ATP levels in cells of the ascitic Hepatoma 129 has been determined using an UV-enzymic method. ATP levels are found to vary inversely with temperature over the range (4°-37°C) studied, and this variation is found to be reversible. An indication of a possible direct correlation of ADP level with temperature was also obtained.A correlation is deduced between rise in intracellular ATP level and decrease in cytoplasmic viscosity, both from the present results, and from similar effects recently reported by Landau ('61) for increase in pressure. The significance of these observations is discussed with reference to the model for cytoplasmic viscosity proposed by Marsland ('56) and the wider biological significance of this effect is explored.
