Notes: Summary This paper discusses the disturbance produced in an infinite layer of non-homogeneous elastic material characterised by ϱ=ϱ0 γn and μ=μ0γn(n〉0) where ϱ and μ are the density and shear modulus respectively of the material, due to periodic torsional force applied on the wall of a cylindrical hole in the layer. The variation of the displacement component with the radius vector is shown graphically and compared with the corresponding homogeneous case.

Notes: Summary We have discussed in the paper the disturbance produced in an infinite layer of nonhomogeneous elastic material characterised by ϱ = ϱ0 Z and μ = μ0 Z where ϱ and μ are the density and shear modulus respectively of the material due to periodic torsional force applied on the wall of a cylindrical hole in the layer. The variation of the displacement component with the depth of the layer is shown graphically and compared with the corresponding homogeneous case.

Notes: Summary Linear couple stress theory has been applied to investigate the stress distribution in a half plane due to a moving line load on the surface. It is assumed that the load is moving slower than both the longitudinal and transverse wave speeds of the elastic media (subsonic case). It is found that the couple stress effect depends on the speed of the moving load, the couple-stress parameter, and thePoisson's ratio.

Notes: Abstract Turnbull's theory of heterogeneous nucleation has been extended to obtain approximate values of interfacial energies γ in solids which exhibit reversible phase transformations. DTA curves of reversible transformations can be analysed in terms of the nucleation theory and with some reasonable assumptions, an estimate of γ can be obtained. A knowledge of the crystal structures of the two phases, along with the enthalpy of the transformation also affords a method of estimating γ-values theoretically. These three approaches have been applied to quartz, K2SO4, CsCl, NH4Cl, and NH4Br; the results have been compared.
