Amniotic fluid was obtained from 100 patients at the induction of labour by hindwater puncture of the membranes using a Drew-Smythe catheter. Biochemical estimations of lactate, pyruvate, glucose, urea and Astrup gas analysis of the amniotic fluid were performed. An effort was made to correlate the biochemical findings in the amniotic fluid at the induction of labour with the subsequent occurrence of fetal distress during labour and with the Apgar score at delivery. No significant correlation was found between the various factors analyzed and the later status of the fetus. High levels of lactate were found in the amniotic fluid together with low levels of pH and buffer base associated with high Pco2 values.
