Notes: Summary Herpesvirus infection of the skin of adult mice of a hairless mouse strain induced eruptions comparable to herpes eruptions in man. The route of infection was by scarification of the skin. The specificity of the lesions was varified histologically and by isolation of Herpesvirus from the lesions. The eruptions spread segmentally similarly to the spread of Herpes zoster in man. Neurological symptoms comprising increasing paralysis were first observed to affect those extremities nearest to the site of initial infection. In later stages, the animals showed symptoms of encephalitis. The infection of hairless mouse skin may serve as a model for the study of the pathogenesis and therapy of Herpesvirus infection of human skin.

Notes: Summary The DNA synthesis in SV40 infected primary renal cells of Cercopithecus was examined using the techniques of immunofluorescence and autoradiography in combination. DNA synthesis was first observed in stationary cultures after 15 hrs. Infection of exponentially growing cells led to renewed DNA synthesis at 20–25 hrs. After treating the growing cells with actinomycin D (1.0 μg/ml) for 30 min., 2.5–3 hrs. after infection, new DNA synthesis began between 10–15 hrs. after infection. Similar treatment of stationary cells after infection had no effect on DNA synthesis. Actinomycin D treatment of growing cells brought about a state that promoted the expression of the viral genome.

Notes: Summary From the theory of the streaming birefringence of solutions of ideally flexible random macromolecular coils with constant hydrodynamic interaction expressions containing rheo-optical and rheological data were deduced. These expressions should be independent of molecular weight and concentration of solute, of velocity gradient and solvent viscosity. Experiments were performed on high molecular weight polystyrene in highly viscous solvent-Aroclor. The stress-optical coefficient is found to be true molecular constant, while the other expressions are dependent on concentration and on gradient parameterβ *. The discrepancies are explained as a result of change of the hydrodynamic interaction with the deformation of macromolecular coil.

Notes: Summary Streaming birefringence and viscosity measurements were performed on solutions of polystyrene in Aroclor in broad limits of molecular weight, applied stress and solvent viscosity. The observed variation of the “constant”B with concentration and gradient and its independence of molecular weight can be qualitatively explained by changes of hydrodynamic interaction caused by coil interpenetration and deformation in flow. At extremely large values of gradient parameterβ * indications of birefringence saturation were found occuring in that region ofβ * as predicted by theory.
