Notes: Abstract. Male weanling rats were fed a diet containing 1.3 mg zinc/kg diet and controls the same diet supplemented by 40 mg /zinc/kg diet. The rates of cell division and upward migration in the cheek epithelium were obtained from counts of labelled cells in animals sacrificed one hour and three days following intraperitoneal injection of 1 μCi tritiated thymidine/g body weight. A 3.4-fold increase over the number of labelled cells in controls was observed one hour after thymidine administration and a 2.7-fold increase three days later. Ratios of labelled cells at three days and one hour were 4.96 in controls and 3.99 in experimental animals. The percentage distribution of labelled cells in successive subdivisions of epithelium was identical in both groups. The number of labelled cells near the junction of granular and keratin layers was 2.9-fold greater in the experimental animals. It is suggested that the zinc-deficient cheek epithelium of the rat might be a useful model for the study of pathological conditions associated with increased rates of cell proliferation.

Notes: Abstract The current induced phase transition from the superconducting to the normalconducting state is studied in whiskers of tin. Transition curves were taken byU(T)-measurements at steady currents as well as characteristic curves byU (I)-measurements at fixed temperatures. For larger current intensities these curves show voltage steps which increase linearly with current intensity. The onset of voltage reading appears at the critical current density, as predicted by theory. The step structures are, however, observed at current densities which are several times larger than the critical ones. The influence of a magnetic field on the location and the structure of the curves was measured and is compared to theoretical predictions. At temperatures close toT co whiskers are onedimensional with respect to the superconducting orderparameter because of their small diameters. Therefore, intermediate state pattern and flux flow are rejected as an explanation of the observed structures.

Notes: Summary The effect of nitroglycerin (N.G.) on the size of myocardial infarction was studied in 12 open-chest dogs with chloralose-urethane anesthesia by means of epicardial ECG-mapping and compared with the influence of simple ligature of the same coronary artery branch. In order to identify the specific effect of N.G. on the heart and the coronary circulation without contribution of the peripheral circulation in 6 dogs aortic pressure was stabilized by a clamp placed around the descending aorta and heart rate was kept constant by atrial pacing. Nitroglycerin (0.5 mg/kg i.v.) infused during the occlusion period of 20 min resulted in a decrease of mean arterial pressure for 27 mm Hg (p〈0.005) and left ventricular enddiastolic pressure for 2 mm Hg (p〈0.05) indicating a diminishment in oxygen demand. Mean coronary blood flow was reduced to a similar extent (18%) as in the control infarction (22%). Compared to simple occlusion no significant alteration in the extent of ST-elevation in the epicardial electrogram was observed during N.G.-infusion even in the presence of hypotension. In the stabilized group with constant afterload (mean arterial pressure) and heart rate nitroglycerin induced a slight, but not significant decrease of the enddiastolic left ventricular pressure compared to the control group. However, coronary blood flow and ST-elevation were unaffected. Thus, neither in the unstabilized nor in the stabilized group the extent of myocardial injury after ligature of a coronary artery branch were influenced by nitroglycerin. Obviously the improvement in the oxygen demand during nitroglycerin is out balanced by the reduction in oxygen supply so that in effect myocardial infarction size is not altered by N.G. as estimated from epicardial ECG.

Notes: Abstract Large quadrupole moments of 1-phonon states of sperical nuclei are shown to follow in a simple and direct way from time-dependent HF equations using the self-consistent perturbation expansion. Whereas the first order describes harmonic quadrupole oscillations, anharmonic terms arise in second order. The scattering of quasiparticles by quasi-particle pairs, which is neglected in RPA calculations, but included in this paper, leads to a second order response of the system and is shown to produce a strong enhancement of the quadrupole moments. Explicit results are obtained with a pairing-plus-quadrupole interaction and discussed within a schematic two level model.

Notes: Abstract It is demonstrated that benomyl, applied as a soil drench, is highly efficient in reducing the quantity of mycelium in muskmelon plants infected byFusarium oxysporum f. sp.melonis. When treated before symptoms appear, plants are generally cured. The blending technique used for assessing fungal spread in the xylem vessels is particularly convenient for studying the action of a systemic fungicide in a plant with vascular wilt.

Notes: It has been shown that the only way to predict the size of the PTC effect displayed by a crystalline polymer when filled with conductive particles is through the knowledge of the glass transition point of the polymer. The size of the PTC anomaly is found to decrease sharply with rise in glass transition temperature and for a polymer to be a useful PTC material its glass transition must be below 0°C. It has not been possible to explain this relationship by any of the current theories of the PTC mechanism in filled polymers.
