    Notes: SUMMARY— The solid compound formed by treating L-lysine with linoleic acid has been examined by chemical stoichiometry, electrical conductivity, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The compound has been shown to be a true equimolar salt. Evidence from nmr and ir spectroscopy shows that the diene system of the linoleic acid is not changed from that in the free fatty acid. Conductivity measurements show that the salt is a moderately strong electrolyte. Salts of other basic amino acids, ornithine and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, with linoleic and oleic acids were also examined and showed similar evidence. Interpretation of the data and the significance of the findings to stability of amino acid salts of unsaturated fatty acids are discussed.

    Notes: SUMMARY— The mechanism and generality of the known stabilization against autoxidation conferred on linoleic acid by certain basic amino acids, such as lysine and arginine, was investigated. Basic amino acids were the only class of compounds found to confer the effect. However, the smallest basic amino acid, 2,3-diaminopropionic acid, was not effective, nor was αβω-diaminc acid, 3,6-diaminohexanoic acid, although a simple isomer of lysine. The stabilization was observed only in the solid phase. Inclusion of sodium chloride in the solid matrix was deleterious to the effect. A large number of physical and chemical observations were made and correlated but it has not been possible to draw detailed conclusions about the mechanism of stabilization, nor can a detailed structure of the stabilized complex be suggested. The cause of the phenomenon appears to be closely associated with the physical arrangement of the ions in the crystal lattice.

    Notes: — The Instron tester served to evaluate physical properties of uncooked rabbit and beef muscle including work of rupture, breaking strength, break elongation elasticity and stress relaxation. These methods measure variations in muscle type, aging and post-mortem treatments comparably with shearing instruments. Shank showed higher tensile properties than tenderloin, less elasticity and lost more applied stress. With rabbit, the breaking force of longissimus dorsi unrestrained during rigor was .237 Ib/g ± 7.5% for samples 5.0 cm by 0.2–0.5 cm2 while restrained muscle gave .168 ± 9.9% and also exhibited higher elasticity and break elongation. Post-mortem aging decreased tensile properties and elasticity. Psoas muscle, characterized by more coextensive fibers, had higher tensile properties than longissimus dorsi.

    Notes: Abstract Two experiments were conducted to examine the behavioral effects of low doses of d-amphetamine in rats. In contrast to previous studies showing depression of fixed-ratio 30 lever pressing by doses of d-amphetamine greater than 0.5 mg/kg, lower doses of the drug were found to facilitate such lever pressing. A low dose (0.05 mg/kg) of d-amphetamine was also found to enhance the amount of prandial drinking following food deprivation. These results indicated that the dose-response curve for d-amphetamine is generally non-monotonic and usually in the shape of an inverted U.

    Notes: Abstract Water-rewarded spatial discrimination learning was studied in rats injected with either d-amphetamine sulphate or physiological saline 15 min prior to the first of two training sessions. The effect of a light which functioned as a reward and/or as a distraction in the testing situation was examined. Amphetamine was found to facilitate learning by enhancing the reward value of light onset and also to impair learning by enhancing the distraction of light onset. The effects of amphetamine were found to interact with the duration of water deprivation preceding the first training session. Factors responsible for the controversy concerning amphetamine's influence on learning were implicated.
