Notes: The mean square displacement (x2) from the theoretical lattice point, obtained from X-ray structure data for myoglobin crystals, is compared with the corresponding value, (x2)T, measured by Mössbauer experiments on the iron in myoglobin crystals. (x2)T depends only on the vibrations of the lattice. The value (x2), however, which is obtained from X-ray data contains a contribution due to lattice faults in addition to the contribution due to vibrations. (x2) − (x2)T = (x2)S is then the contribution due to lattice faults alone. The experimental values are (x2) = 13.2 × 10−2 Å2 and (x2)T = 8.6 × 10−2 Å2 giving (x2)S = 4.6 × 10−2 Å2. The same comparison was made for K3[Fe(CN)6] and for hemine. Here (x2) was roughly equal to (x2)T. In addition the temperature dependence of (x2)T was measured for myoglobin crystals. A new procedure is described for the substitution of the isotope 57Fe required for Mössbauer measurements for the natural iron in myoglobin.

Notes: Abstract We have performed an experimental study of the feasability to employ resonance scattering of γ-radiation in order to measure directly the phase of the structure factor which is required in X-ray crystal structure determination. The phases of the (020) and the (040) reflection of a K3Fe(CN)6 single crystal were determined by measuring the interference between nuclear resonance scattering and by electronic scattering.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. Experiments were performed to prove the activity of the adrenal cortex of rats either dehydration by saluretics or prolonged water deprivation (8 days). For dehydration by saluretics furosemide (40 mg/kg) or hydrochlorothiazide (1,25 mg/kg) were given three times daily through 1, 2 and 3 days. 2. After the administration of furosemide both plasmacorticosterone and the weight of the adrenals were significantly increased, cholesterol contents of the adrenals decreased. The thirsting rats and the animals dehydrated by hydrochlorothiazide showed normal values of plasmacorticosterone and adrenal cholesterol, adrenal weight wag higher than normal, but lower than after dehydration by furosemide. 3. The above mentioned results lead to the conclusion, that the well-known inhibition of edema by furosemide is caused by the stimulation of the pituitary-adrenal-system. This is indicated also by the absence of edema-inhibition after furosemide administration in adrenalectomized rats.
