Notes: The LBNL third generation electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source has progressed from a concept to the fabrication of a full scale prototype superconducting magnet structure. This new ECR ion source will combine the recent ECR ion source techniques that significantly enhance the production of high charge state ions. The design includes a plasma chamber made from aluminum to provide additional cold electrons, three separate microwave feeds to allow multiple-frequency plasma heating (at 10, 14, and 18 GHz or at 6, 10, and 14 GHz) and very high magnetic mirror fields. The design calls for mirror fields of 4 T at injection and 3 T at extraction and for a radial field strength at the wall of 2.4 T. The prototype superconducting magnet structure which consists of three solenoid coils and six race track coils with iron poles forming the sextupole has been tested in a vertical Dewar. After training, the sextupole magnet reached 105% of its design current with the solenoids off. With the solenoids operating at approximately 70% of their full design field, the sextupole coils operated at 95% of the design value which corresponds to a sextupole field strength at the plasma wall of more than 2.1 T. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Methods used to track the free surface in numerical flow simulations, typically during the casting of metals into moulds are examined in this paper. The algorithm employed makes use of a mixed interpolation formulation to approximate the discretised governing equations for elimination on a Langrangian type moving mesh. Significant savings in CPU time are realised by virtue of the the air domain not being considered in the finite element analysis. The advantages and drawbacks of commonly used methods are discussed, and a method proposed for the numerical simulation of flow where the free surface boundary conditions are important. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in solving typical industrial flow problems is demonstrated using numerical examples. The results obtained are compared with analytical and numerical data with a view to validating the algorithm.

Notes: Abstract  Previous studies implicated cathepsin D as one commonly recognized target of tumor-reactive immunoglobulins from ovarian cancer patients. These immunoglobulins are shown to be immunoreactive with both the 52-kDa procathepsin D and the 32-kDa mature cathepsin D derived from the UL-1 ovarian cancer cell line. Whether the carbohydrate domains or the core protein were associated with its immunogenicity was analyzed with cathepsin D isolated from tunicamycin-treated UL-1 cells. No significant difference was detected in the immunoreactivity of patient serum with the glycosylated and deglycosylated forms of the cathepsin D, suggesting that patient humoral responses are directed primarily against the core protein. To define the antigenic epitopes of cathepsin D, tryptic fragments were prepared from UL-1-derived procathepsin D. The epitopes of the core protein recognized by sera from more than one patient were identified using a peptide-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and microsequencing of positive immunoreactive peptides. This protocol identified four epitopes: two peptides within the pro-peptide, a third at the carboxy terminus and the fourth at the glycosylation site of the mature enzyme. This approach to the identification of specific antigenic epitopes may be useful in defining effective targets for directed active immunotherapy against cancer.

Notes: Abstract  A genetic map of the long arm of chromosome 6R of rye was constructed using eight homoeologous group-6 RFLP clones and five PCR markers derived from the rye-specific dispersed repetitive DNA family, R173. The map was developed using a novel test-cross F1 (TC-F1) population segregating for resistance to the cereal cyst nematode. Comparisons were made between the map generated with other rye and wheat group-6 chromosome maps by the inclusion of RFLP clones previously mapped in those species. Co-linearity was observed for common loci. This comparison confirmed a dramatic reduction in recombination for chromosome 6R in the TC-F1 population. The CreR locus was included in the linkage map via progeny testing of informative TC-F1 individuals. CreR mapped 3.7 cM distal from the RFLP locus, XksuF37. Comparative mapping should allow the identification of additional RFLP markers more closely linked to the CreR locus.
