    Notes: Abstract Methods of incubation are taxonomically important in Spirorbinae. About half of the known species incubate in the operculum, but the remainder are usually described simply as “incubating within the tube”. Studies of tube incubation show that the embryos are anchored in various ways. They form an egg string, which is attached to the tube by a posterior filament in Spirorbis and Spirorbella; they adhere more generally to the tube wall in Circies and Paradexiospira; they are attached to specialised thoracic stalks in Protolaeospira, Helicosiphon and Romanchella; they adhere to the body surface in Metalaeospira and probably in Eulaeospira; they are not attached to either body or tube in Paralaeospira. Tube incubation is found predominantly in temperate or cold waters. In most species from the southern hemisphere, embryos are anchored to the bodies of the parents, but in most species from the northern hemisphere, embryos are fixed to the walls of the parent tubes.

    Notes: Summary The first cleavage division of Pomatoceros triqueter eggs is described. Time-lapse microcinematographic and electron microscopic studies revealed that, prior to division, the plasma membrane was folded into pleats. These were not present after division. This fact pointed to an unfolding of the plasma membrane which enabled it to cover the increased surface area resulting from cleavage. It is suggested that the pre-cleavage folds are derived from the membranes of the cortical granules, which continue releasing their contents into the perivitelline region following fertilization and first division. Filamentous material in the form of a band was present subjacent to the plasma membrane in the region of the furrow. The individual filaments of this band measure 5 to 7 nm in cross section, the dimensions being similar to those described for other kinds of dividing cells.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es ist die Fällung von Silberchlorid durch Hydrolyse von Benzylchlorid in wässeriger Silbernitratlösung in Gegenwart von Benzylalkohol und Natriumdodecylsulphat untersucht worden, um den Einfluß dieser Zusatzstoffe auf das Kristallwachstum zu studieren. Das Kristallwachstum wird durch einen Grenzflächenprozeß kontrolliert, die Geschwindigkeit dieses Prozesses hängt von der Ladung der Partikel und von der Konzentration der Zusatzstoffe ab. Eine modifizierte Wachstumsgleichung, in der durch Adsorption von Verunreinigungen bedingte Verminderung der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeit berücksichtigt wird, gibt Resultate, die mit den experimentalen Angaben gut übereinstimmen.
    Notes: Summary The precipitation of silver chloride, produced by the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride in aqueous silver nitrate solution, in the presence of benzyl alcohol and sodium dodecyl sulphate, has been studied to determine the effect of these additives on crystal growth. The growth is controlled by a process at the crystal-solution interface, and the rate of this process is dependent on particle charge and additive concentration. A modified growth equation which takes into account the reduction in growth rate due to adsorption of impurities, gives close agreement with the experimental data.
