Description / Table of Contents: Summary The extensive investigation of heme precursors and enzymes of fetal blood and erythropoietic tissues shows the following results: In erythrocytes absolute moderate enhanced, in respect of the reticulocytosis normal till slight induced pattern of heme enzymes between Ala and Protoporphyrin with a relative increase of all heme precursors (referring to the reticulocyte-index), which leads to the conclusion of an increased porphyrin or heme synthesis in human fetal erythropoiesis. This results agree with the demonstration of an accelerated maturing of the fetal erythropoiesis in liver by animal experiments. Increasing levels of porphyrins in the liver in correlation with the fetal age are related to a basal intensified porphyrin synthesis, which is overlapped by liver erythropoiesis and rising function of the liver in accumulation and elimination of Proto- and Coproporphyrins. The results of the investigation of spleen tissue indicate a moderate porphyrin accumulation but no essential erythropoietic activity in this organ.
