    Notes: Beef and rabbit psoas muscle fibers were soaked in a crude muscle cathepsin preparation, collagenase or 2% KCl. Tensile properties (breaking strength and break elongation) and surface ultrastructure were monitored. Cathepsins considerably accelerated decreases in tensile properties found in an un-soaked control while KC1 produced significant but less extreme effects. Collagenase showed similar results for breaking strength but break elongation was only slightly influenced. Surface ultrastructure revealed that KC1 caused a variable loss of structure including collapse and disappearance of striations, swelling and some transverse fiber breakage. Cathepsins speeded and expanded this damage producing multiple breakage with extensive disruption in some cases. These effects are similar to those observed in naturally aged meat and occur at the same temperature and pH. Collagenase treatment, however, initially brought about a shredding and dissolution of collagen fibers followed by disintegration of the sarcolemma and exposure of relatively undamaged myofibrils.

    Notes: Abstract Rats with posterior medial forebrain bundle (PMFB) lesions and control rats were administered morphine chronically for 4 or 5 days via implanted subcutaneous silicone reservoirs. Following cessation of morphine administration after five days, PMFB rats showed less withdrawal-induced weight loss than control rats. Other PMFB and control rats were subjected to forced drinking of morphine solution for 9 days. PMFB rats consumed the morphine solution much more readliy than control rats, whereas intake of a quinine solution was similar in two other PMFB and control groups. These results suggest that the addictive and dependence properties of morphine may have separate mechanisms and based on previously reported neurochemical effects of PMFB lesions, that biogenic amines may be differentially involved in such mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract When offered a solution of d-amphetamine sulphate (0.025 mg/ml) in place of water, normal rats initially drank more drug solution per day than previously consumed water. The drug solution quickly became aversive to normal rats as daily intake decreased. Tolerance to the anorexic effect of d-amphetamine paralleled the decrease in daily drug intake. Rats with bilateral lesions of frontal cortex initially consumed as much drug solution and as much food as normal rats. Although frontal rats' daily intake of drug solution also decreased, an aversion never developed. Tolerance to d-amphetamine's anorexic effect took much longer to occur in frontal rats. The results indicated possible roles for both cumulative drug effects and conditioning factors in the response to chronic d-amphetamine use. A possible mechanism by which frontal cortical lesions interfered with chronic changes was suggested.

    Notes: Abstract High-energy proton (E p 〉 55 MeV) and electron (E e 〉 50 keV) events were observed by University of Iowa experiments on the satellites Explorer 33 and 35. The solar X-ray (2–12 Å) flares associated with the energetic proton events were found to have in general higher peak fluxes, considerably longer decay times (Δt) and smaller rise to decay time ratios (r) than the X-ray flares associated with the electron events. The most common decay times and rise to decay time ratios are: 80⩽ Δt ⩽ 100 min, 0.1 ⩽ r ⩽ 0.2 for the proton X-ray flares and Δt ⩽ 20 min, 0.3 ⩽ r ⩽ 0.7 for the electron ones.
