    Notes: Abstract The quantitative hydrocarbon composition and behavior in seawater of water-soluble fractions (WSF) and oil-in-water dispersions (OWD) of 4 oils was investigated. Two crude oils, South Louisiana crude and Kuwait crude, and two refined oils, No. 2 fuel oil and bunker C residual oil, were used in these investigations. The WSFs of the crude oils had higher total oil-hydrocarbon concentrations and were richer in light aliphatics and single-ring aromatics than were the WSFs of the refined oils. The WSFs of the refined oils contained significantly higher concentrations of naphthalenes than did those of the crudes. The hydrocarbon composition of the aqueous phase of OWDs closely resembled that of the parent oils. Gentle aeration of the OWDs resulted in a loss of 80 to 90% of the aqueous hydrocarbons in 24 h. Alkanes disappeared from the dispersions more rapidly than aromatics. The WSFs and OWDs of the refined oils were considerably more toxic to the 6 test species than were those of the crude oils. The test species can be ranked according to increasing sensitivity to oil as follows: Cyprinodon variegatus, Menidia beryllina, Fundulus similus, Penaeus aztecus postlarvae, Palaemonetes pugio and Mysidopsis almyra. The results of this investigation are discussed in relation to the potential impacts of oil spills on the marine and estuarine environments.

    Notes: Summary Cell division was synchronised in 4-litre batch cultures of Acer pseudoplatanus L. by starvation and regrowth. Up to five consecutive cell cycles were observed in each culture. Mitosis and cytokinesis were synchronised within 0.2 cell cycles. Accumulation of extractable DNA was discontinuous and separate from cytokinesis. Correction for the degree of synchrony in the population gave: G1=13–37 h, S=15 h, G2=14–19 h and M=0.9–1.3 h. Thymidine kinase activity and [14C]thymidine incorporation were highest during S-phase. A peak of activity of aspartate transcarbamoylase occurred during G2. Peaks in succinate dehydrogenase activity and respiration rate were observed at the initiation of DNA synthesis and just prior to mitosis. The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase doubled in one step during the cell cycle. Total RNA and protein accumulated continuously through the cell cycle; the final rate being twice that observed initially.

    Notes: Summary It is demonstrated that pyrimidine dimers induced in the DNA of yeast by UV irradiation become soluble in weak acid during a period of incubation in growth medium in the dark. This excision is accompanied by the gain of about 18 bases per excised dimer in the acid soluble fraction. The number of dimers as a fraction of total thymine is considerably enhanced in the acid soluble compared to the acid precipitable fraction of cells, suggesting that base excision is specific to dimer-containing regions.
