Notes: Coherent cw operation of a 10×10×2 grating-surface-emitting diode laser array in a ring configuration is demonstrated. At near twice the threshold current, the ring array exhibits a high degree of spatial coherence (an average of 86%) between emitting grating sections and a narrow linewidth of 28 MHz. The far field fringe visibility is 80% and 88% in the lateral and longitudinal directions, respectively.

Notes: Cadmium telluride is a promising thin-film photovoltaic material as shown by the more than 10% efficient CdS/CdTe heterojunction solar cells. In this work, thin-film CdS/CdTe solar cells have been prepared using CdS films grown from an aqueous solution and p-CdTe films deposited by close-spaced sublimation (CSS). The properties of CdS films deposited from an ammonical solution of a Cd-salt, an ammonium salt, and thiourea have been controlled by optimizing the temperature and composition of the solution. The solution-grown CdS films have a high photoconductivity ratio, and its optical transmission is superior to that of vacuum evaporated CdS films. The properties of p-CdTe films deposited by CSS have been optimized by controlling the temperature and composition of the source material, and the substrate temperature. The properties of CdS/CdTe heterojunctions have been studied; junction photovoltage spectroscopy is used for the qualitative comparison of junction characteristics. Solar cells of 1-cm2 area with an AM 1.5 efficiency of 13.4% are reported.

Notes: Amorphous LRE-TM SmCo perpendicular magnetic film provides a promising candidate for perpendicular magnetic recording media.1 In order to improve the magneto-optical properties of SmCo films, we have studied the ternary system: Smy(Co100−xDyx)100−y films which were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering system. Because the Dy moment is antiferromagnetically coupled to the Co moment and Dy has a larger magnetic anisotropy, Dy addition will increase Ku and decrease Ms of LRE-TM films. With the Dy addition content increased from 0 to 10 at. %, the perpendicular anisotropy constant K⊥ (K⊥ = Ku(K⊥=Ku− 2πM2s) increased to improve the magneto-optical properties of SmCo films. The torque curve measurement and Kerr hysteresis loop of SmCoDy film had proved it was perpendicular magnetic film. In order to prevent RE metal selective oxidation of SmCoDy films, a protective layer AlN was used. AlN films were prepared by rf reactive sputtering.2 The temperature dependence of AlN/SmCoDy/glass were studied. Hc decreased rapidly when temperature increased while its Kerr angle decreased slightly. When the sample was cooled to room temperature, Hc and θk returned to its original value. The results show SmCoDy films may become new material of magneto-optical recording media. The long-term stability and microstructure of SmCoDy films have also been studied.

Notes: The dielectric and pyroelectric properties of lithium sodium niobate ceramics are investigated between the temperature range 320–120 K. The result is indicative of a first-order ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition at low temperature with a large thermal hysteresis. At temperatures near the phase transition, an unusual pyroelectric response is observed, which is attributed to the coexistence of the two ferroelectric phases. The result is in agreement with the measurement we made on the lithium sodium niobate single crystals.

Notes: A theoretical study of the dynamic light scattering spectrum from a binary solution consisting of a polymer and a small molecular weight solvent is carried out. The study is based upon a modified hydrodynamic equation previously derived from statistical mechanics by Bearman and Kirkwood for a multicomponent solution. The result shows that mutual diffusion arising from the osmotic pressure fluctuation and the viscoelasticity affecting mechanical properties of the polymer solution are, in general, mixed. The extent of mixing depends on the frequency and a coupling parameter β, which is proportional to the difference between the partial specific volume of the polymer and that of the small molecular solvent. At low frequency the coupling is negligible, and one obtains a diffusion equation with the mutual diffusion coefficient dependent only on the osmotic modulus. At the frequency in the plateau stress modulus region, the result predicts a cooperative diffusion coefficient which consists of both the osmotic modulus and the longitudinal elastic modulus of the polymer solution, provided that β=1. The result is equivalent to that previously obtained by de Gennes, assuming a transient gel network model for the semidilute polymer solution. The present calculation also provides new results for the polymer solution in which the transient gel network model is not applicable. The overall light scattering spectral density is calculated in terms of the autocorrelation functions of the local pressure and the local concentration, as well as cross correlation functions between them. The result shows that as the polymer concentration is gradually increased toward the bulk state, the concentration fluctuation spectrum losses its importance, and the pressure (or density) fluctuation spectrum dominates the overall light scattering spectral density.

Notes: Photon correlation spectroscopic studies of the mutual diffusion of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO/PMMA) blends are carried out. The experimental investigation deals with the measurement of the mutual diffusion coefficient of the PEO/PMMA blend by varying the molecular weight of PEO but keeping the molecular weight of PMMA fixed. At 20% volume fraction of PEO, and high PMMA molecular weight, the mutual diffusion coefficient linearly decreases with M−1PEO. The temperature dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient is non-Arrhenius. The Onsager coefficient of mutual diffusion is obtained as a function of temperature.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Amylopectin granules were purified from Eimeria tenella oocysts following digestion with sodium dodecyl sulfate and pronase. The oval granules had a uniform size of 0.5 × 0.7 μm, and consisted of only glucose polymers. α-Amylase treatment yielded 235 nmoles of maltose from the granules from 106 unsporulated oocysts and 93 nmoles maltose from those from 106 sporulated oocysts.Amylopectin phosphorylase activity was detected in the cytoplasm of unsporulated oocysts of E. tenella. It had a specific activity of 13 U/mg protein in crude extracts, and a pH optimum of 6.0. The Km values determined were 9.1 mM for glucose-1-phosphate and 5.6 mM for glucose end groups in potato amylopectin. Enzyme activity declined at a linear rate during sporulation, sporulated oocysts containing less than 8% of the activity of unsporulated oocysts. No amylase-type activity was found in the parasite.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. The total content of DNA in Eimeria tenella, estimated at 5.8 × 10−12 gm/oocyst, varies little during sporulation. Its buoyant density is 1.682 gm/cm3, reflecting a G + C content of ∼41%. Thymidine is not incorporated into any TCA insoluble fraction of sporulating oocysts, but radioactivity from [3H]uridine and [3H]deoxyuridine are incorporated into RNA at a linear rate during the first 5 hr of sporulation. The labeled RNA, found mainly in the paranuclear bodies of newly formed sporozoites, contains ∼0.15 nmole [3H]uridine/106 oocysts at the completion of sporulation. One nmole of leucine is incorporated into the hot TCA insoluble fraction of 106 oocysts during the first 7 hr of sporulation after an initial lag. The incorporated amino acid is mainly in the cytoplasm of the sporozoites, and an analysis by SDS-gel electrophoresis reveals most of the radioactivity in a narrow band with a molecular weight of ∼50,000 daltons. Incorporation of uridine and leucine, however, can be totally suppressed by respiratory inhibition. Further analysis of the proteins in the oocysts reveals that the total protein content remains relatively unchanged at 2.64 × 10−16 gm/oocyst during sporulation, but there is a shift of 13–14% of total protein from the soluble cytoplasm to the 15,000 g pellets. By polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, a major protein band. possibly a glycoprotein, is shown in the soluble cytoplasm of unsporulated oocysts. This band disappears during sporulation.
