Notes: Abstract An entire bed of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, consisting of 5,000 individuals/m2, died during June, 1971 in the effluent canal of a steam generating plant when the temperature increased above 27°C. Similarly, the population in the intake canal disappeared when temperatures rose above 27°C in August. Laboratory studies showed that M. edulis could not tolerate continuous temperatures above 27°C, and feeding stopped shortly after the mussels were exposed to 25°C. Histopathological studies indicated that the cause of death of this bivalve was associated with degeneration of the frontal and laterofrontal cilia of the columnar epithelium of the gill filaments. In conjuction with this, there was necrosis and sloughing of the epithelium of the intestinal diverticula. Extensive amoebocytic infiltration was noted in the byssogenous cavity, gill filaments and stomach wall.

Notes: Summary The rate of cholesterogenesis in rat liver, measured by the incorporation of labelled acetate or mevalonate into cholesterol, was significantly supressed by the use of 4-methyl-5-hydroxy valeric acid sodium salt. This effect cannot be explained by changes in HMG CoA reductase activity.

Notes: Summary We studied simultaneously in serum (S) and CSF (L) the enzyme activities of GOT, GPT, LDH, ICDH, MDH, ALD, and CPK in 28 patients with head injuries divided into three groups according to the severity of the trauma. We found a correlation between severity of brain lesion and enzyme activity. The best correlation was found for SGOT, SCPK, LGOT, LLDH, LMDH and LCPK. We do not believe that enzyme activity is of prognostic value. We think that further studies should be made of the specific isoenzymes of the Central Nervous System.

Notes: Summary The presence of mucopolysaccharides (MP) in Neurospora crassa hyphae was detected in samples of cultures from 4 h to 5 days. Using a modification of the method of Rothman (1969), acid MP were identified by electron microscopy in vesicles located at the apex, septae, and throughout the cytoplasm of the hyphae. The size, number, and localization of these vesicles was related to the stage of growth of the fungus. The mechanisms of release and transport of these macromolecules are compared to the process of secretion in cells endowed with a better developed endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi system. The specificity of the method was evaluated histochemically. The structures displaying greater electron density corresponded to the Alcian blue positive areas.

Notes: Eight imide-diacids were synthesized from trimellitic anhydride, pyromellitic anhydride and aminoacids of the formula HOOC—(CH2)n—NH2, with n = 1,2,3,5. From them, polyanhydride-imides were obtained following a general method of formation of polyanhydrides in the presence of acetic anhydride1,2.These co-polyimides have an aliphatic-aromatic structure and the relation between the general properties and the amount of the aliphatic part in the repeat unit was studied. IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and viscosity measurements were used for the characterization. Studies of solubility, hydrolysis resistance and thermal properties were also made.
