Notes: Abstract— The rates of brain tyrosine and tryptophan hydroxylation, estimated in vivo from the accumulation of DOPA and 5-hydroxytryptophan after the administration of a decarboxylase inhibitor, appear dependent on the availability of oxygen as a substrate. During two types of physical stress, electroshock and curare-immobilization, the rate of brain tyrosine hydroxylation was greater than in unstressed controls and was not significantly decreased when the stresssed animals were made hypoxic. The loss of oxygen dependence by brain tyrosine hydroxylation during stress was observed in several brain regions and was not associated with alterations in the concentrations of brain tyrosine. tryptophan, serotonin, dopamine or norepinephrine. The rate of brain tryptophan hydroxylation was not affected by stress and remained oxygen dependent. The increase in catecholamine synthesis during stress appears to be the result of increased catecholaminergic nerve impulse flow. These experiments are consistent with the hypothesis that during neuronal stimulation an allosteric change in tyrosine hydroxylase increases the affinity of the enzyme for oxygen allowing greater catecholamine synthesis despite limiting concentrations of this substrate.

Notes: Maternal plasma oestriol and human placental lactogen (HPL) were measured serially in 383 at-risk pregnancies. Eighty-five infants were growth retarded and 122 developed fetal distress or neonatal asphyxia. Of the infants whose mothers had either abnormal plasma oestriol or HPL levels, 58 per cent were growth retarded, while 65 and 73 per cent in each group respectively developed fetal distress. The incidence of fetal complications when both plasma oestriol and HPL were abnormal was consistently greater than 66 per cent.

Notes: Twice as many boys as girls are prone to wheeze (15·3% compared with 7%). This study examines the possible immunological basis for this phenomenon. There were 1064 children in this survey. The family of each wheezy child was indexed, and a control sample of families was selected. At least 85% of the study population were skin tested for Type 1 allergic reactions. An interval survey of values for FEV1, FVC and PEFR against height was completed.Of 118 wheezy subjects there were 83/542 boys and 35/522 girls. Single and multiple sensitivity, the capacity to react to two or more major allergens, is examined. Of the child asthmatics, significant differences from controls emerge for pollens, foods and the house dust mite. These differences are borne out with multiple sensitivity. (P 〉 0·001.) Of the brothers and sisters of asthmatics, only the sisters show differences from controls. This is true for grass pollen, cow's milk and the house dust mite, and also to a highly significant degree for multiple sensitivity (P 〉 0·001). When the incidence of multiple sensitivity is expressed for all children in the asthma group, that is, cases and their siblings, the sex difference is not demonstrable. The mothers (P 〉 0·05) and fathers (P 〉 0·01), of asthmatics also differ from control parents in respect of skin sensitivity. If multiple sensitivity is equated with atopy, it may not be the main determinant of the capacity to wheeze, and thus of the sex difference. The mean curve for interval PEFR for asthmatic children was significantly lower than that of control children and of the brothers and sisters of asthmatics.

Notes: [Auszug] Since 1973 we have studied the colony of Arctic skuas on Fair Isle. This study has included the accurate surveying of the positions of the nests of all pairs of birds in the colony. We have mapped the nests on paper, drawn the lines connecting each nest with its adjacent nests and then the lines ...
