    Notes: Abstract— Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase activity (calcium-dependent and calcium-independent) and CDR (calcium-dependent regulator protein of phosphodiesterase) are present in all ten brain regions examined, with the specific activity of both being highest in areas predominating in grey matter and lowest in areas consisting largely of white matter. Fractionation of cerebral cortex into neuronal and glial perikarya shows that cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase and CDR are present at approximately equal levels in both cell types. Subcellular fractionation reveals that calcium-sensitive enzyme specific activity, as well as CDR are highly localized in the 100,000 g supernatant fraction. Regional, cellular and subcellular distribution studies indicate that the distribution of CDR closely parallels the distribution of enzyme specific activity, suggesting that the levels of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase and CDR may be synchronized.

    Notes: The upstream spawning migrations of brown trout and sea trout were studied using stationary traps placed in Kirk Burn, a tributary of the upper Tweed. The sea trout spawning period extended from early November to the first week of December, while that of brown trout occurred from the middle of October to the third week of December. Sea trout were predominantly maiden spawners of ages 2.1+ and 3.1+ while brown trout were mostly age 2+ and 3+. Male-female sex ratios approximated 1:1.4 in sea trout but 6 : 1 in brown trout. Brown trout males participated in the spawning activities of sea trout. Low water conditions in Kirk Burn hindered the upstream movement of spawning sea trout, while sudden increases in water level appeared to stimulate the upstream migration of both brown trout and sea trout. The suggestion is advanced that the freshwater resident brown trout of the Tweed which migrate upstream into the smaller tributaries to spawn is wholly, or at least partially, the progeny of anadromous parents.

    Notes: Summary The fat body of the cockroach, Blaberus cranifera, and the silkmoth, Hyalophora gloveri, has been tested for some enzymes of the urea cycle. While ornithine transcarbamoylase and argininosuccinase activities could not be detected, arginase is present in the fat body of these insects. These results explain the essentiality of arginine in the diet of insects.

    Notes: Abstract The residues of polycholorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and DDT (p,p′-DDT and its metabolites) were determined in fish collected at various sites off the Atlantic Coast of Canada during 1971 and 1972. The results of analyses of 261 samples representing 29 species of Crustacea, bivalves and finfish, indicated widespread distribution of these contaminants and preferential accumulation in lipid rich specimens. Only fatty specimens of pelagic finfish consistently contained more than 0.1 μg/g of PCB and DDT. Bluefin tuna was the only species with residues frequently in excess of 1 μg/g. No appreciable differences were observed in residue levels of specimens taken during different years or in specimens taken at different sampling sites. A total of 83 samples representing 7 selected tissues and fishery products were also analyzed for PCB and DDT. No residues of lindane, aldrin, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide and methoxychlor, and only very low levels of dieldrin and hexachlorobenzene were present in the 104 samples examined for these residues.

    Notes: Abstract Certain commercial preparations of bovine albumin, fraction V, show inhibitory activity in the rubella hemagglutination (HA) and hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests. This does not appear to be due to albuminper se, but instead to a contaminant (or contaminants) with the properties of a lipoprotein. All inhibitory activity can be removed from albumin preparations by treatment with kaolin, gel filtration, or flotation ultracentrifugation. We have found that, even when there was no inhibition of HA titers, kaolin treatment of the albumins prior to their incorporation into the test diluent resulted in more clearly defined agglutination patterns. Reasons for and against including albumin in the test diluent are discussed. It is concluded that, although not essential, it is a worthwhile additive. Our data suggest, however, that each batch of albumin used for this purpose should be checked for the presence of inhibitor, and that treatment with kaolin might be considered as a routine step prior to its incorporation into the test diluent.
