Notes: The antimicrobial activity of a variety of aliphatic diols and their esters has been investigated. Inhibition of growth of Bacillus subtilis 60015 was found to depend on chain length and position of the hydroxyl groups. 1,2-diols were more effective than 1,3diols. Esterification also affected antimicrobial activity. Studies with membrane vesicles prepared from B. subtilis indicated that inhibition of amino acid transport is a primary antimicrobial effect of diols and their esters.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract Alumina supported platinum, palladium and bimetallic platinum-palladium catalysts have been investigated in the hydrogenolysis of n-hexane. Results show that, compared with platinum, the activity of bimetallic catalysts is several times lower while the selectivity to hydrogenolytic products increases from 72 to 100%.
