Notes: Abstract— Crude striatal synaptosomes were used to determine the affinity of brain tyrosine 3-mono oxygenase for oxygen. The rate of tyrosine hydroxylation was determined at several different oxygen concentrations using L-[14C]tyrosine as substrate and measuring the [14C]DOPA formed in the presence of a decarboxylase inhibitor. The accumulation of [14C]tyrosine by synaptosomes was unaffected by incubation in nitrogen or 2.3% oxygen. Preincubation in nitrogen for up to 4 h did not impair the ability of synaptosomes to hydroxylate tyrosine when returned to air. Furthermore, pre-incubation in either nitrogen or air produced similar changes in the ultrastructural appearance of the synaptosomes and mitochondria in the crude preparation used in these studies. Thus tyrosine hydroxylation in these synaptosomes appeared to reflect tyrosine 3-mono oxygenase activity over a range of oxygen concentrations. The apparent Km for oxygen was 2 × 10−5 at pH 6.7 and 7.4. The apparent Km was not significantly altered by the addition of Ca2+, and was slightly increased in the presence of N6-mono-butyryl cyclic AMP or high K+. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that the availability of oxygen may limit catecholamine synthesis in the intact rat brain.

Notes: The outputs and neutral of a three phase generator are converted to six amplitude variable phases in a 3.5 kW 400 Hz transmitter. These outputs are applied to six groundimplanted electrodes, producing a horizontally rotating current dipole in the subsurface. An investigation of the radiation pattern in the vertical magnetic field indicates, in symmetry and closure control, considerable advantages in this form of galvanic energization. These include optimization of inductive anomalies and the ability to interpret phase observations on a spatial basis in depth sounding and orebody location.

Notes: Abstract A new and efficient procedure for testing a pair of digraphs for isomorphism is developed. It is based on conducting a depth-first search on one of the digraphs followed by a systematic matching of edges using backtracking with very effective pruning. It is proved that for digraphs (ofn vertices) the expected time complexity of this procedure isO(n logn ). This theoretical result is verified empirically on more than 300 large random digraphs. This procedure is shown to be more efficient than any of the existing general isomorphism procedures.

Notes: Summary The effects of apomorphine on psychotic symptoms were evaluated in chronic schizophrenic patients using double-blind placebo controlled procedures. Although on the basis of dopamine theory of schizophrenia, apomorphine was expected to increase schizophrenic symptoms, in this study apomorphine substantially reduced psychotic symptoms in some chronic schizophrenic patients. No patient showed the substantial increase in psychotic symptoms previously demonstrated after the administration of IV methylphenidate. These clinical effects of apomorphine in schizophrenia may be relevant to recent pharmacological research which has indicated that apomorphine also has potent effects on presynaptic dopamine neurons, in addition to its previously described postsynaptic receptor stimulation.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the behavior of the X-ray bremsstrahlung spectra resulting from two distinct types of electron distribution functions impinging on a target atmosphere during flare activity. A power-law distribution function is compared with two double-peaked Maxwellians. The results of these calculations show that it would be difficult to rule out multithermal interpretations for the emitted high-energy X-rays.

Notes: Abstract According to Parker's earlier articles in this journal the photospheric temperature is lower in sunspots than elsewhere because of increased outflow of mechanical energy, rather than inhibited inflow from the convective zone. In this case the atmosphere above the spot group receives an excess supply of energy that must equal the deficiency in radiative power output of the spot group compared with the normal photosphere. The extra power supplied to the atmosphere was then assumed to be lost by radiation. On 26 November 1973 the active region McMath 12628 was studied with sufficient precision to test for this equality. It is shown that the atmosphere did not radiate and almost certainly did not receive, more than a very small part of the ‘missing flux’ of the spot group. This result is an important constraint on the plausible theories of sunspot formation.
