Notes: Abstract Larvae of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. have been reared on several preserved inert foods. Mussel larvae are capable of ingesting and assimilating artificial foods. Detritic foods such as ground Spirulina sp., ground Ulva sp., ground plant and animal debris (Tetramarin) are acceptable to larvae. However, dissolved, colloidal or detritic foods form clumps, which agglutinate the larvae or can induce bacterial blooms. Frozen or lyophilized algae (Monochrysis lutheri, Tetraselmis suecica, Chlorella sp.) produced the best results, and growth rates obtained using such algae are equivalent to those achieved using the same living algae.
