Notes: Summary Exudates and extractives of roots ofRuellia tuberosa, containing 2,6-dimethoxyquinone, acacetin and a C16-quinone, have been shown to produce significant protective and curative actions againstFusarium oxysporum-incited wilt of safflower. The potentiality of the root extractives as a foliar fungicide is appraised.

Notes: Abstract The room temperature tensile properites of a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined in the beta quenched as well as in tempered conditions and the results have been rationalized in terms of possible hardening mechanisms. The appearance of the fracture surfaces has been correlated to the microstructures developed in the alloy after various heat-treatments.

Notes: Abstract The morphology and kinetics of the precipitation of the alpha phase produced by two different heat treatment routes, namely, (a) direct isothermal decomposition and (b)β-quenching and subsequent ageing, were studied. In isothermally decomposed samples theβ′ (supersaturated) →α + β transformation was seen to occur mainly through the discontinuous growth of the transformed zone consisting of groups of parallel side plates from the grain boundary regions towards the interior of the grain. Unlike for the case of a regular discontinuous precipitation, here the transformed regions are not separated from the untransformed by an incoherent interface and the growingα-plates do obey a fixed orientation relationship with the grain from which they are evolved. The theory of cellular reaction has been applied to explain the growth rate of the duplex (α + β) region. The overall reaction kinetics were analysed on the basis of the Johnson-Mehl formulation and were found to be consistent with that of a discontinuous precipitation reaction, where grain boundary nucleation sites were saturated at an early stage of the transformation. The structure of theβ-quenched samples showed a uniform distribution of athermal omega particles which acted as precursors to theα-precipitates. As a consequence, the reaction rate was greatly enhanced andα-precipitation in the quenched and aged samples was seen to occur continuously in the entire body of the grain.

Notes: Abstract We present a study of the inclusive production ofK *(892) and ∑t+-(1385)+cc at 3.6 GeV/c from $$\bar p$$ p interactions. The sensitivity of the exposure is 35.4 events/μb. Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are presented. The indirect production ofK s 0 from parentK * and that of Λ's from parent Σ(1385) are studied. The shape of thex distribution of Λ's for $$p\xrightarrow{{\bar p}}\Lambda $$ are calculated from $$p\xrightarrow{p}\Lambda $$ and $$p\xrightarrow{{\pi ^ - }}\Lambda $$ and compared with the experimental distributions. The difference of antiparticle production cross-section ofK s 0 in the central region is compared with the expectation from Mueller-Regge formalism.

Notes: Abstract The precipitation of ZrCr2, which is a Laves phase with the C15 structure, in a supersaturated, martensitic matrix has been studied in a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy using transmission electron microscopy. The nucleation, morphology and distribution of the precipitates has been examined at different tempering temperatures. The crystallographic orientation relationship between the α-Zr(Cr) and the ZrCr2 phases has been established and the precipitate habit plane determined.

Notes: Abstract The morphology and the substructure characterizing the martensite produced on beta quenching a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy. The structural changes that occur in the martensite structure on tempering at various temperatures in the α+ZrCr2 phase field have also been investigated.

Notes: The sulfur vulcanization of NR by a MBT-TMTD mixed accelerator system both in the presence and absence of ZnO and stearic acid with or without DCP has been studied. The rate of decomposition of DCP in the presence of both MBT and TMTD is quite similar to that in the MBT system alone. The reduction in crosslinking due to DCP is dependent mainly on MBT. The decomposition product of TMTD may contribute to it only at the later stage of vulcanization. Though TMTD has no influence on the decomposition rate, it reacts with MBT at least in the initial stage of vulcanization and suppresses the retardation caused by MBT on DCP vulcanization in accordance with the free sulfur decrease, the nature of crosslinking formation both in the presence and absence of DCP, and the methyl iodide treatment of the vulcanizates. The vulcanization process of the MBT-TMTD-S-NR system has been interpreted in terms of both free radical and polar mechanisms. The domination of either of these depends on the dominant amount of either MBT or TMTD in the acclerator ratio. According to the initial high rate of crosslink formation, free sulfur decrease and also the initial additiveness of crosslinking in stocks containing DCP, the vulcanization process of MBT-TMTD-ZnO-St. acid-S-NR system has been explained in terms of an ionic mechanism. The pronounced synergistic nature of such systems has been interpreted by the enhanced activation of MBT-S-ZnO-St. acid complex due to the dithiodicarbamate ion formed in the initial stages of vulcanization, and also by the activation of TMTD accelerated vulcanization due to the mercaptobenzothiazylion.

Notes: Diphenylguanidine (DPG) raises the rate of decomposition of dicumylperoxide (DCP) and the crosslinking maxima due to DCP is lowered to some extent by DPG. When the molar proportion of DPG-S is approximately 1:1, no additive results of crosslink formation (as reported for NR) are observed. Zinc oxide and stearic acid increase the rate of crosslinking as well as the crosslinking maxima. In the present study it appears most probable that DPG-accelerated sulfuration of SBR is an ionic process. At a constant level of DCP and sulfur crosslink density increases when the amount of DPG is increased; a constant level of DCP and DPG crosslinking increases with rising sulfur concentration. An increase in the concentration of DPG or sulfur leads to greater formation of the complex as well as a change in its composition. The effect of DPG is more pronounced, for by reducing the number of sulfur atoms more sulfur is available for crosslinking. Sulfur absorbs little SO2 or H2S; if it is already saturated, there is no perceptible effect. DPG does absorb H2S or SO2 and the rate and maxima of crosslinks is increased. The effect of SO2 is higher because of the higher Ka values of H2SO3 and consequently higher concentration of HSO3-. Reversion is a free-radical process inhibited by free DPG present in the system. In the presence of zinc oxide and stearic acid the reaction follows a polar mechanism as well as a radical mechanism.
