Notes: A randomized controlled trial was mounted in which induction of labour at term was successfully accomplished in 12 patients by amniotomy and intermittent (or pulsed) oxytocin, compared with 16 patients receiving continuous oxytocin. In the pulsed group, oxytocin was infused for one minute in every ten using a modified Cardiff Infusion System Mark III in the automatic setting. Compared with the control group the induction-delivery and induction-to-full-dilatation intervals were similar but the total dose of oxytocin required was significantly lower in the pulsed group than in the control group.

Notes: Summary Serum levels of clindamycin bioactivity and total clindamycin were studied after single intramuscular injections of 300 mg of clindamycin phosphate in a group of 6 normal subjects and a group of 6 maintenance haemodialysis patients. The patients were studied during a non-dialysis period and then again during haemodialysis. Peak levels tended to be higher and elimination half-lives shorter in the patients than in the normal subjects. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. There was no evidence that haemodialysis per se influenced the pharmacokinetics of clindamycin phosphate. The proportion of unhydrolysed clindamycin phosphate tended to be higher in the renal failure patients and the reason for this is not apparent. Little, if any, dosage modification is necessary in severe renal failure although there is probably little point in exceeding a dose of 300 mg intramuscularly every 8 h even in severe infections in patients with severe renal failure. The higher peak levels in patients with advanced renal failure indicate the need for further studies with repeated doses.

Notes: Summary The total and alactic oxygen debts were measured in eight subjects following supramaximal treadmill running (14.5–16.1 km/h, 20% grade) to exhaustion, on two duplicate tests separated by 48 h. Mean total oxygen debts on the two trials were 5.28±0.42 1 and 4.57±0.46 1, (r=0.34). Mean alactic oxygen debts were 2.81±0.21 1 and 2.74±0.12 1 (r=0.89). Values for maximal total and alactic oxygen debts in this study were in close agreement to those found in the literature. The inability of the subjects to adequately reproduce an exhausting supramaximal effort was the major factor preventing reliable measurement of total oxygen debt. It is concluded that the method developed for the measurement of oxygen debt is both reliable and valid for the alactic portion of the debt.
