Notes: [Auszug] The Pb-, Nd-, and Sr-isotope compositions of oceanic ferromanganese deposits, together with the Nd-, and Sr-isotope compositions of altered ocean-floor basalts are reported. These data are used to evaluate the sources of these metals in both the oceans and ferromanganese deposits and the extent to ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es werden linear-viskoelastische Gleichungen angegeben für das Kriech-T-Sprung-Experiment (creepT-jump experiment), d. i. eine Methode zur Bestimmung der scheinbaren Aktivierungsenergie bei viskoelastischen Deformationsvorgängen.
Notes: Summary Linear viscoelastic equations have been presented for the creepT-jump experiment, a technique which has been used to determine apparent activation energies for viscoelastic deformation processes. The equations describe the creep rate at any time,t, before and after a rapid change in temperature. These equations were solved for various cases using realistic forms for the retardation spectrum, a box and a wedge distribution. A straight line was predicted for creep rate data plotted against time on log-log coordinates for times before the imposed temperature change att′. In general, a curve will be seen on the same plot for data obtained aftert′; the exact form of this curve depends upon the value ofΔH a and the shape of the retardation time distribution. The box distribution was used to find the effect ofb T on the creep rate at times after theT-jump and on the determination ofΔH a in experimental circumstances. The magnitude of the effect was not as great as had been previously thought, and a method by which the problem could be overcome was suggested. With the development of these equations for the creepT-jump it is possible to determine the apparent activation energy of a viscoelastic deformation process by fitting the whole of the experimental creep rate against time curve in aT-jump experiment. This is felt to be superior to previous methods which relied on extrapolated values of the creep rates at the time of theT-jump. The feasibility of this new method was demonstrated by applying the equations to data fromT-jump experiments on a specimen of human digital tendon. Excellent agreement was found between the theoretical predictions and the experimental data.

Notes: Length-temperature measurements were made on unfilled and carbon-black filled vulcanizates of styrene-butadiene rubber. As in earlier experiments on polybutadiene, transients in thermal expansion behavior were observed following abrupt changes in the temperature. The nature of this time dependence was not dramatically affected by either the level of equilibrium strain or the structure and loading of the carbon-black filler. Both the magnitude of the linear coefficient of thermal expansion and the point of thermoelastic inversion were sensitive to the presence of carbon-black. A model based on considerations of occluded rubber and strain amplification in the free rubbery matrix was used successfully to rationalize the observed behavior of the filled compounds.
