Notes: Abstract An inclusive theory is developed for stresses and displacements due to arbitrarily distributed normal and tangential loads acting on a circular crack in an infinite body. The representation chosen for the boundary conditions leads to solutions expressed as series of Bessel-function integrals of a class quite susceptible to further analysis and to rapid evaluation on modern computers. The load coefficients which appear in all the solution series bear intelligible interpretation, and stress intensity factors are related to them by simple formulas. The inclusiveness and tractability of the solutions qualify this theory to be a useful part of analyses for cracks in finite bodies in which the effective crack loads can assume many patterns.

Notes: Abstract The oscillatory and non-oscillatory regions of radial wave functions are connected by the use of spherical Bessel functions or Coulomb wave functions. The resulting formulae for the magnitude of the wave function at the origin in terms of the energy spectrum are used to exhibit the appropriate form of boundstate/free-state duality.

Notes: Abstract In this report, the treatment of a 42-year-old female with a complaint of chronic sleep-onset insomnia is described. Following the unsuccessful use of relaxation training, treatment consisted of 11 sessions of EEG theta rhythm (4–7 Hz) biofeedback. Theta density and five sleep indices were monitored throughout baseline, placebo, and treatment sessions. A significant increase in theta density was accompanied by reports of a decrease in sleep latency and an increase in total sleep time. This improvement was maintained after withdrawal of medication and at 3-month follow-up.

Notes: The yield behavior during cold drawing of commercially spun poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) filament yarn was investigated. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of inherent flaws within the spun filaments; these act as points for localized stress concentration. These inhomogeneities appear to be either internal cracks or crazes developed during the fiber melt spinning process. During elongation, stress magnification at these flaws results in shear band formation, indicating the onset of inhomogeneous yielding. At the yield bend in the load-elongation curve a circumferential crack propagates within these shear band regions. This yield crack develops into the classical neck geometry which further localizes additional plastic deformation within the sample at the neck.
