The course of the cationic polymerization is characterized by the interaction of the monomer with the cationic chain end. By means of model reactions as well as model calculations the influence of the substituents on the donicity of the monomer resp. on the acceptor behaviour of its cation has been investigated separately for parasubstituted styrenes. The substituent effects on monomer and cation are oppositely directed. The overall polymerization rate depends only on the influence of the substituent on the monomer reactivity. The investigation of styrenes with methyl groups in α- resp. β-position shows, that the reactivity of the monomers is both orbital- and charge-controlled.

Der Ablauf der kationischen Polymerisation wird durch die Wechselwirkung des Monomers mit dem kationischen Kettenende charakterisiert. Durch Modellreaktionen und -rechnungen wird der SubstituentenEinfluß auf die Donatorfähigkeit des Monomers bzw. auf das Acceptorverhalten seines Kations am Beispiel der parasubstituierten Styrole getrennt erfaßt. Die Substituentenwirkung auf Monomer und Kation ist gegenläufig. Die Bruttopolymerisationsgeschwindigkeit folgt in ihrer Abstufung allein dem SubstituentenEinfluß auf die Reaktivität des Monomers. Die Berücksichtigung von Monomeren mit einem Methylsubstituenten in α- bzw. β-Stellung des Styrolsystems ergibt, daß die Reaktivität der Monomere sowohl orbital- als auch ladungskontrolliert ist.
