Notes: Abstract The effect of a uniform transverse magnetic field on the free-convection flow of an electrically-conducting fluid past an infinite, vertical, porous plate for both classes of impulsive as well as uniformly-accelerated motion of the plate is discussed. The magnetic lines of force are assumed to be fixed relative to the plate. Expressions for the velocity field and skin friction for both cases are obtained by the Laplace transform technique. The influence of the various parameters, entering into the problem, on the velocity field and skin-friction is extensively discussed with the help of graphs and tables.

Notes: Summary The chromosome complements of 12 taxa in section Arachis were karyotypically and meiotically analysed. In taxa with 2n=20 the arm ratio of the respective pair of chromosomes was taken as an independent quantitative character and statistically analysed by Mahalanobis D2. Two clusters were formed, one represented solely by A. batizocoi and the other consisting of the remaining 11 taxa. This grouping was confirmed by canonical analysis. In the larger group of species, A villosa and A. correntina were closely related karyotypically and on D2 distance, while A. cardenasii forms a distinct subgroup. A. cardenasii lacks the short “A” chromosome recorded in other species of this group, and A. batizocoi is no longer the only species to have a pair of chromosomes with a secondary constriction. The taxa with 2n=40, A. monticola and A. hypogaea, are karyotypically very similar, though there is a difference in the number of chromosome pairs with a secondary constriction. On the basis of karyomorphological affinity, especially in relation to marker chromosomes, A. cardenasii is probably one of the ancestors of the tetraploid species studied.

Notes: Summary Different diploids of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and their corresponding autotetraploids were seed-treated with 40 krad of γ-rays, and parameters such as germination, survival, growth reduction, pollen fertility, pod setting, etc. were recorded. A stimulation of seed germination due to the irradiation could be observed. Contrary to the general rule that polyploids are more radioresistant than their corresponding diploids, one 4x strain was completely killed while the 2x version survived comparatively well. Apparently gene reduplication is not the overall protective mechanism as was once earlier believed. The importance of genotypic influence on radiosensitivity was demonstrated at both the 2x and 4x level. The limitation of interphase chromosome volume and degree of ploidy in predicting radiosensitivity is discussed.

Notes: Summary Angular leaf spot (Isariopsis griseola Sacc.) is a serious disease of French bean in the hills of India and 40 to 70 per cent of the green pods are damaged and rendered unmarketable. Crosses were made between PLB 257, (Phaseolus coccineus L.), a red flowering pole tope, resistant to angular leaf spot, and Contender (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), a highly susceptible commercial cultivar. Studies of the F1, F2, and F3 progenies indicated that PLB 257, carries a recessive gene imparting resistance to angular leaf spot.

Notes: Abstract Gamma-gamma angular correlation measurements of the 569·65 keV–1063·63 keV cascade in the decay of207Bi were carried out with two NaI (Tl) detectors of size (3″×3″) and (1·5″×1″). Graphical methods of Arns and Wiedenbeck (Phys. Rev.111 (1958), 1631) were applied in determining the mixing ratio of gamma 1063·63 keV transition. The parametric plot was done by the method described by C. F. Colman (Nucl. Phys.5 (1958), 495). The mixing ratio of gamma 1063·63 keV transition was thus found to be $$|\delta | = 0.036_{ - 0.064}^{ + 0.034} .$$ .
