Notes: Abstract: The expression of the 70-kDa heat shock cognate (HSC70) and stress-inducible (HSP70) proteins, and their mRNAs, was examined in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a model of inflammatory demyelination in the CNS. This study was undertaken as an extension of previous work demonstrating an abrupt decline in mRNA levels of both glial fibrillary acidic protein and the low-molecular-weight neurofilament subunit in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis spinal cord at 12 days after inoculation, the height of inflammation and clinical signs. Using the same total RNA preparations as our previous study, we report here that mRNA levels for HSC70 increased approximately sixfold over control values at the same time that glial fibrillary acidic protein and low-molecular-weight neurofilament subunit messages decreased and were similar to controls by 21 days after inoculation. In situ hybridization experiments showed that HSC70 mRNA was predominantly expressed in neurons and that the influx of inflammatory cells into the CNS was not responsible for the large increase in HSC70 message. Despite this elevation in mRNA, only small (if any) increases in protein levels for HSC70 were detected by both western blotting and in vitro cell-free translation systems. However, by quantitative immunoblotting, we determined that constitutive levels of HSC70 comprised a substantial portion of CNS proteins, representing 2–3% of the total protein content of spinal cord. Immunohistochemical staining illustrated that the distribution of HSC70 was consistent with that of its message. In contrast, no HSP70 mRNA or protein was detected in either control or experimental animals.

Notes: Efforts have been made to determine whether surface antigens could be used as biochemical markers to define strain differences in the parasitic ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. In previous studies, a wild-type isolate designated G1 was found to have surface proteins analogous to the immobilization antigens of Paramecium and Tetrahymena; rabbit antiserum against this strain immobilizes homologous cells in vitro. It has now been shown for two additional Ichthyophthirius isolates (designated G1.1 and G2) that immobilization antigens are both present and serologically distinct. Proteins of similar size, which cross-react in Western blots with rabbit antisera against immobilization antigens of the G1 strain, are nevertheless found in the G1.1 and G2 isolates. As shown by Southern blotting analysis, the G1.1 and G2 strains also contain genomic DNA sequences which hybridize with an immobilization antigen cDNA from G1 when probed under conditions of reduced stringency. The serotypic differences in immobilization between I. multifiliis isolates appear to be stable over time and provide a means of discriminating strains. In addition to providing a basis for comparative studies, the work described here has implications for the development of vaccines against this important fish parasite.

Notes: In 80 patients, multiple measurements of the fetal biparietal diameter were made during one examination using a real-time scanner equipped with a coded cephalometer. From the sets of data, the means and standard deviations for the group of 80 patients were calculated. In 80 per cent of cases, the individual standard deviations of the results were less than or equal to the estimated standard deviation of the group as a whole. The variability of measurement related to biparietal diameter was least in the range 59 to 83 mm. Comparison of the results obtained with the coded device and others obtained ‘blind’ does not reveal any significant advantage for the coded device.

Notes: Abstract Magnetotelluric soundings show that the conductivity increases in the asthenosphere. The depth of this conductivity zone decreases with an increase of the surface heat flow, i.e. in such cases the lithospheric plate is thinner. The depth of the velocity decrease of seismic shear wave (S waves) shows the same connection with the surface heat flow. The solidus of a mixed-volatile medium intersects the temperature curves belonging to different surface heat flows at depths where the conductivity increase and the velocity decrease appear. These connections point to partial melting in the asthenosphere, which can decrease the viscosity too, and help the movement of the lithospheric plates according to the ideas of global tectonics. The melt fraction of peridotite and pyrolite determined by Shankland and Waff from the effective conductivity of the asthenosphere is about 3–4% at 30 kbar and ato *=0.1 S m−1. In the upper mantle of old shields it is likely that there is no well-developed asthenosphere due to the low temperature. Over these so-called ‘viscous anchors’ the lithospheric plates do not move. It is supposed that the conductivity increases observed below crystalline shields at a depth of about 300 km indicate the phase transition of rocks. Thus in these areas the surface of the phase transition can be at a higher position than in the younger tectonic units.

Notes: Summary The kallikrein-kininogens-kinins system has been investigated in the brown Norway rat. In this breed the stores of kininogens in the plasma are reduced and the plasma kallikrein-like activity appears to be absent both in vivo and in vitro.
