    Notes: The anatomy and morphology of the digestive tract of the eel was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The oeosphagus showed complex longitudinal folding; stratified epithelium, columnar epithelium and goblet cells striated muscle fibres formed the thick muscular coat. The pneumatic duct entered the oesophagus anterior to the oesophagastric junction. The Y shaped stomach showed large well developed folds which decreased in size and number towards the pyloric sphincter. Columnar epithelium and gastric gland cells were present, the latter being absent from the pyloric region.The intestine had a heavily thickened anterior region, signs of convulation were noted prior to the ileorectal valve. Intestinal folding showed a complex reticulate pattern with columnar epithelium and goblet cells present. The mucopolysaccharides were studied in the goblet and columnar cells throughout the regions of the gut. Lymphocytes and eosinophilic type cells were found in the connective tissue of the mucosa throughout the gut. The pancreas was a compact organ with few Islets of Langerhans, beta cells were peripherally situated and alpha cells centrally. The unilobular liver acted as a storage organ for oil and glycogen.

    Notes: 1. A colloidal bismuth preparation, tripotassium dicitrato-bismuthate, was given (172 mg/kg body weight, 6/7 days) to 10 laboratory rats for 14 months. Bismuth was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry in various tissues and the pattern of distribution studied.2. Bismuth was present in kidney, lung, spleen, liver, brain, heart and skeletal muscles, in descending order of abundance. Haematological data, renal and liver function tests were normal in the bismuth-treated group.3. The data suggested that chronic ingestion of bismuth in large doses in rats results in absorption and binding to tissues. Absorbed bismuth probably crosses the blood-brain barrier.

    Notes: Abstract The response to incompatible (self) pollination in rye (Secale cereale L.) includes the rapid deposition in the germinating pollen grain and pollen tube of a substance that stains with aniline blue, resorcin blue and calcofluor, and in these respects resembles callose. This substance has been isolated and analysed by acid hydrolysis and methylation as well as specific enzyme hydrolysis. It contains a glucan component with 1,4-β-glucosidic and 1,3-β-glucosidic linkages within the same linear chains. The proportion of 1,4-to 1,3-glucosidic linkages in the preparation is 77∶9.
