Notes: The effect of temperature (100°C) and heating time (up to 384 hr) on the physicochemical properties of high molecular weight (M̄p ≅ 4 × 106) partly hydrolyzed (τ ≅ 31%) polyacrylamide (HPAM-25) solutions with initial pH values near 4 and 7, respectively, is reported. Potentiometric and spectroscopy data indicate that upon heating the solutions for 16 days the extent of hydrolysis is increased up to around 90%. The viscosity behavior, especially in the presence of bivalent salt (CaCl2), can be explained by taking such an increase in hydrolysis into consideration. From light scattering data, it is shown that the conformational changes are not correlated with molecular weight degradation.

Notes: A wrinkle-resistant cotton fabric was produced by photoinitiated free-radical reaction of a glycidyl methacrylate monomer from a methanol-water solution to form a poly(glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer, followed by crosslinking reactions of oxirane groups of the copolymer with cellulose. The product had increased conditioned and wet recovery angles and retained breaking and tearing strengths and stiffness values in the ranges normally obtained for wrinkle-resistant cottons. The effects of these reactions on the fiber structure were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The modified fibers were resistant to dissolution in cupriethylenediamine dihydroxide.

Notes: Raman spectroscopy and microscopy have been used to study some catalysts: Mo supported on alumina. Different Mo species were found, depending upon the amount of molybdenum deposited on the carrier. At low coverages (4% wt MoO3) distorted molybdate tetrahedra were observed. Increasing the surface coverage resulted in the formation of a polymolybdate phase with octahedrally surrounded molybdenum. Additionally, ‘bulk MoO3’ appeared when amounts were above 16% wt MoO3. When the supports were washed during their preparation with aqueous NH4OH and HNO3 solutions, preferential formation of polymolybdate phase was observed. In case of washing with alkaline solution ‘free MoO3’ was also detected. Finally using the Raman microprobe MOLE, a map giving the distribution of the different species at the surface of support was obtained.
