    Notes: The development of middle-ear structures in the mouse was examined in nine groups of pups between 1 and 45 days of age. The area of the tympanic membrane (pars tensa and pars flaccida), the length of the lever arms of the malleus and incus, the surface area of the oval window, and the volume of the bulla all showed systematic changes during neonatal life. The area of the oval window reached maturity first and the lever arms achieved 90% of their adult size on day 11. The tympanic membrane achieved the same criterion on day 18. These data help us further to understand the processes that contribute to the functional ontogeny of the middle ear.

    Notes: We present evidence that extends our earlier preliminary report on the stimulatory effect of saline washes on confluent cells in culture (Lacey et al., '77). That work suggested that an inhibitory substance was being removed by the washes. The present work suggests that the inhibitor is in the 10,000-30,000 MW range, is reversibly bound, is cationic and is also a protease inhibitor. It is heat stable, but is apparently degraded with time in our experimental systems.

    Notes: Human marrow cells were irradiated with 2450-MHz CW microwaves in a fluid-filled waveguide irradiation system. Cell exposure was conducted by placing a marrow cell suspension in 20-μl glass microcapillary tubes that were positioned in the exposure chamber, and irradiated at power densities from 31 to 1,000 mW/cm2 (with corresponding specific absorption rates of 62 to 2,000 mW/g) for 15 minutes. The temperature of the sample was maintained at a fixed point. Sham-irradiated (SI) and microwave-irradiated (MWI) cells were cultured in a methylcellulose culture system for neutrophil colony proliferation. There was no reduction in neutrophil colony number on days 6-7 or 12-14 in cells exposed at 31 or 62 mW/cm2, but as the power density was increased to 1,000 mW/cm2, there was a reduction in colony number of MWI cells compared with SI cells. The microwave interaction with the human neutrophil colony-forming cells was apparently not related to temperature rise, or to the state of cell cycle, and was irreversible.

    Notes: Isokinetic muscle testing has become an increasingly popular method for measuring muscle performance. However, the relationship of isokinetic strength measurements to static strength measurements remains unclear. The relationship between maximal isokinetic and maximal isometric torque was investigated at angular velocities of 24, 48, 96, and 192°/s for both flexion and extension of the elbow joint. Twenty-four subjects were tested bilaterally, and discrete torque values at the positions of 60 and 90° of flexion were obtained from the continuous isokinetic records for comparison with isometric torques recorded at the same two positions. Data were analyzed using an analysis of covariance with isokinetic torque, the dependent variable, expressed as a function of isometric torque and as a function of the design variables side and position. The results demonstrated significant effects of side and position and also demonstrated the dependence of isokinetic strength on velocity. Confidence intervals were determined for the prediction of isokinetic torque from observed isometric torque for normal individuals, providing a potentially useful tool to aid in the diagnosis of muscular disorders.
