Notes: The effects of soil temperature and soil moisture content on the rate of simazine degradation were measured in the laboratory in soils from sixteen sites located in several different countries. First-order half-lives under standard incubation conditions were significantly correlated with clay content, organic carbon content and soil pH in a multiple linear regression. The temperature dependence of degradation was similar in the different soils whereas the moisture dependence showed considerable variation between soils. Persistence of simazine was also measured in the same soils in the field and at live additional sites. Weather records from the different sites for the periods of the Held experiments were used in conjunction with constants derived from the laboratory data in a computer program to simulate persistence in the field. In general, the model overestimated residues in the field. About half of the calculated residues were within 25% of those observed, an accuracy sufficient for practical purposes, but on several occasions the discrepancies between calculated and observed residues were greater than 50%. Possible reasons for the discrepancies and requirements for further experiments are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We have made near-infrared photometric observations of nine β-Cephei and eight δ-Scuti stars inJ, H, andK bands. The observed fluxes are in good agreement with those expected according to their spectral types. We conclude that these stars do not have any anomalous emission in these near-infrared bands.

Notes: Abstract The porosity of hardened cement paste was analysed using fluid displacement methods, optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Attention has been drawn to the problems of mercury porosimetry and in particular to the extent of the pore volume which is missed by mercury. Previous workers have assigned the “lost porosity” to pore sizes too fine to be seen by mercury but this paper considers the contribution of closed pores. Nitrogen and water adsorption studies have been carried out on the pastes to determine qualitatively the magnitude of the pore volume beyond the range of mercury porosimetry. This volume was found to be very small. Emphasis has been placed upon the importance of large spherical pores, which may be missed by mercury porosimetry and adsorption studies, in determining the strength of cement pastes.

Notes: Summary During a survey of Southern Darfur Province, Sudan blood samples from over 4,000 migratory cattle were analysed to determine levels of anaemia and trypanosome parasitaemia by buffy coat examination of microhaematocrit centrifuged samples. Levels of trypanosomal infections in the herds correlated well with their risk of exposure to tsetse being significantly lower at increasing distance from tsetse foci.Trypanosoma vivax infections predominated in all herds, increasingly so with increasing distance from tsetse foci. Packed cell volume values could not be used to assist in trypanosome diagnosis at either individual or herd levels and the lack of correlation between anaemia and parasitaemia is suggested as evidence of a degree of trypanosomal tolerance in the Western Baggara cattle. Drug use and problems of drug resistance are discussed. Bovine trypanosomiasis is largely under control at present but requires continued surveillance (particularly of drug use) to prevent future problems as tsetse/cattle interactions increase.

Notes: Critical micelle concentration (CMC) of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) at various pH's between 2 and 10 has been studied using three methods as dye absorption, conductance, and light scattering measurement. At low pH (below pH 4) the CMC decreases whereas at higher pH it remains constant.
