Notes: A semiautomated differential calorimetric procedure for the determination of uric acid is reported. Samples are treated with hydrochloric acid, incubated at 55–60°C in a water bath, and neutralized with sodium hydroxide. Uric acid is extracted with sodium acetate and is determined with phosphotungstic acid as the color reagent. Uric acid is destroyed with uricase, and the calorimetric analysis is repeated for a blank measurement. The reaction specificity of uricase and its immobilization in a nylon coil contribute to the reliability of the method, which permits analysis of 30 samples/hr. Recovery studies and analyses of actual samples show that uric acid can serve as a chemical index of insect infestation in a variety of foods. The sensitivity of the method is approximately 5 μg uric acid/g of sample and is adequate to ascertain objectionable levels of stored product insect excreta contamination in food products.

Notes: Inactivation kinetics of Clostridium perfringens strains NCTC 8238 and NCTC 8798 vegetative cells were evaluated in autoclaved ground beef after growth at constant (37, 41, 45, or 49°C) or linearly rising temperatures (4.0, 6.0, or 7.5 C°/hr) representative of long-time, low-temperature (LTLT) cooking. Inactivation temperatures of 55, 57, 59, 60, and 61°C were used. D values and z values were determined. For strain NCTC 8798 cells grown at 45°C, the average D59°C was 7.2 min and the zD was 3.8 C°. Both strains exhibited greater heat resistance after growth at higher constant temperatures. Also, NCTC 8798 was more heat resistant than NCTC 8238. With linearly rising temperature, terminal growth temperatures appeared dominant in resistance to inactivation. These data will permit predictions of growth and survival of C. perfringens during LTLT cooking of beef roasts.

Notes: Abstract Copper in seawater caused injury to the radioles (gills) of the sabellid polychaete,Eudistylia vancouveri. Light and electron microscopy showed the loss of cellular adhesion and the structural derangement that lead to cell necrosis and death. The progression of injury was related to the uptake of copper into the tissues. Copper was found by X-ray microanalysis to be localized subcellularly in membrane-bound vesicles that are similar to lysosomes. Cell breakdown may result from lysosomal labilization.

Notes: Abstract Characteristics of thin water film flow down an inclined plane surface without as well as with superposed countercurrent air flow were studied experimentally. Three different angles of inclination of the channel with horizontal were investigated. At each inclination angle, five film Reynolds numbers were studied. Experiments were performed beginning at zero air flow and then increasing the air flow rate in steps until water entrainment occurred. Visual observation of the film surface was carried out as were film thickness measurements by means of capacitance probes. Results presented include mean film thickness and distribution, frequency spectra and propagation velocities of interfacial disturbances, and the incipience condition for entrainment of water from the film into the air stream.

Notes: Abstract A study has been made of four Al2O3-Al composite materials fabricated by the directed oxidation of molten aluminium alloys. Their microstructures are described and measurements of density, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, hardness, elastic constants, compressive strength, flexural strength, fracture toughness, work of fracture, and thermal shock resistance are reported. Compared to a typical dense sintered Al2O3, such as Durafrax® 1542, which is somewhat harder, stiffer, and stronger in compression, the new composites can be stronger in flexure, particularly at high temperatures, far tougher, and considerably more resistant to thermal shock. Attempts are made to relate their differences in properties to microstructure.

Notes: Abstract The method of cyclic-time optimization has been used, in conjunction with a beta-Kx-ray coincidence technique, to obtain the beta spectrum of some decaying cerium isotopes in the fission products of252Cf. A Kurie plot of the beta spectrum revealed at least four beta groups. From the relative isotopic yields of Kx-ray the isotopic origin of each group has been determined. The coincidence method used in this study allows the measurement of beta groups feeding excited levels of daughter products with high internal conversion coefficients. The end-point energies and isotopic origin of the measured beta groups were as follows: 2.349(±0.100)MeV,145Ce; 1.715(±0.103)MeV,145Ce and148Ce; 1.267 (±0.103)MeV,145Ce; 0.748(±0.109) MeV,146Ce and148Ce.

Notes: Abstract Fifteen male exhibitionists were compared to 36 nonviolent, nonsex offender controls on CT brain scans, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-R), and the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery (HR). The exhibitionists differed from controls only on HR subtests Tactual Performance Total Time, Trail Making Test A, and Aphasia Screening Test. Global differences between the two groups in structural brain damage and functional impairment were not found. Contrasting results of brain damage in exhibitionists and other sex offender groups are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-seven erotic and sexually neutral movie clips were shown to 191 men, consisting of 62 heterosexual intrafamilial child sexual abusers, 57 heterosexual and 25 homosexual extrafamilial child sexual abusers and 47 community controls. The stimuli depicted males and females from ages 6 to 25 years. Maximum penile volume changes were recorded during the 30 second stimulus presentations. Analyses showed that the phallometric test had high internal consistency (alpha=0.93) and revealed the expected erotic preference profiles for controls and extrafamilial offender groups. The homosexual group reacted most to 13–15 year old boys which made them more easily discriminated from the other groups. The intrafamilial offenders, however, overlapped considerably with controls and only 10% showed a pattern of penile responses expected for the ‘classical pedophile’, i.e., largest responses to female children. The pattern of results supported the accumulating evidence that child sexual abusers are heterogeneous in terms of their sexual preference profiles.
