    Notes: SUMMARY. The ecology of the phytoplankton of Heywood Lake, Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, Antarctica was investigated during 1969–72. The lake, which is ice-covered for 8–10 months per year, is moderately eutrophic due to enrichment by seal excreta.The annual cycle of the phytoplankton is described. During the winter (approximately May-September), very few algal cells could be detected in the water column and 14C fixation was below measurable limits. In spring (October-November), a rapidly-growing population of algae caused a large increase in the chlorophyll-a concentration (maximum value 170 mg m−2) but carbon fixation remained low, with values 〈500 mg C m−2 day−1. The algae contributing to this peak were mainly small chlorophytes and chrysophytes. The summer open-water period (December-March) was characterized by a different phytoplankton population dominated by cryptophytes. Chlorophyll levels were lower (c. 40 mg m−2) but 14C fixation rates 〉3 g C m−2 day−1 were measured on bright days. Values for Assimilation Number were very high (maximum value 10.5 mg C h−1 mg−1 (chlorophyll-a) in January (1971) though temperatures never exceeded 8°C. In autumn, the phytoplankton regressed to winter levels. Both spring and summer algal populations probably overwinter as resting stages.

    Notes: In every generation the overwhelming majority of those who inhabited the imperium Romanum worked on the land and derived their sustenance directly from it. The notion is commonplace and scarcely admits of debate, but its implications for long have suffered unwarranted neglect. The well-being of any society ultimately rests upon the quantity and diversity of its food supplies, but the immediacy of their contact with the soil continually reminded the Roman people of this platitude with a force which few students of their history today can readily appreciate. The annual yield of wheat in particular, always a staple item in the Roman diet, and to a lesser extent of such cereals as panic and millet, acutely affected every segment of the Roman community. One example will serve to illustrate the point. The dependence of the plebs urbana upon imported surpluses is notorious, equally the intense suffering and violence which typically accompanied any disruption of their supply. Such outbreaks frequently punctuated the chaotic final decades of the Republic, but they also scarred more than one régime during the first two centuries of the Principate.

    Notes: Abstract The development of fluidized-bed electrowinning for copper and other metals appears to be impeded by the high electrical energy consumption associated with the anodes used in such electrowinning. This paper describes preliminary work aimed at seeking anodes which consume less energy and are suitable for scale-up. Using laboratory-scale cells in which copper was electrowon from strong (25 g dm−3 Cu), acidified (100 g dm−3 H2SO4) sulphate solutions on to fluidized cathodes, the following anodes were tested: fluidized-bed anodes of catalyst-coated titanium particles, packed-bed anodes of lead shot and graphite, single and double layers of catalyst-coated titanium mesh, and cloth-covered anodes placed directly in the fluidized cathode. In addition, the possibility of using alternative anode reactions, namely oxidation of sulphur dioxide, ferrous ions or cuprous ions, as well as fluidized-bed electrowinning from a cuprous-ion catholyte, were examined. Except for the fluidized anode and the lead packed-bed anode, all the above systems yielded energy savings. The investigation was not sufficiently detailed to define which of the above was best, although, at 2.0 kW h kg−1 Cu, electrowinning from cuprous solutions with cuprous oxidation on a graphite packed-bed anode offered an energy consumption better than that of the conventional electrowinning plants.

    Notes: Summary Reactivity of airways to 6 min of graded intensity treadmill work was studied in nine asthmatic and 15 non-asthmatic subjects. After performing a progressive $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ max treadmill test, each subject completed five 6-min exercise tests at selected intensities: 40, 60, 80, and 100% $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ max; and at 80% of $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ max predicted from heartrate. Pulmonary function measures recorded after exercise demonstrated a direct relationship between work intensity and exercise induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) for both groups, with the asthmatics showing their lowest values at 80% $$\dot V_{O_2 } $$ max. Heartrate-set work intensities produced a wide range of aerobic demand, thus significantly increasing the variability of the EIB response recorded.
