Abstract A high-temperature X-ray diffraction method was employed to establish,in situ, the eutectic temperature (1910±20° C) and the liquidus line in the Al2O3-ZrO3 binary system. The eutectic composition was determined by optical microscopy to be 42.5±1 wt% ZrO2. No evidence was found for the existence of a reportedε-Al2O2 high temperature phase.
