    Notes: Summary. The gonadotrophin responses to single and repeated injections of a long-acting synthetic analogue of luteinizing hormone releasing factor (LRF), d-Ser(TBU)6EA10LHRH, were investigated in 10 women with normoprolactinaemic hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. Abnormal luteinizing hormone (LH) responses were observed in two of the five patients treated with 5μg of the analogue and in all five patients treated with three injections of 10, 20 and 10 uμg administered at intervals of 10-14 h. However, the LH response to repeated injections of the analogue was of similar magnitude and duration to that observed in normal women in response to an oestrogen provocation test in the early-to-mid follicular phase of the cycle. Thus failure of the LH response to oestrogen provocation in women with hypogonadotrophism results from hypothalamic rather than primary pituitary dysfunction. This study confirms the usefulness of this analogue of LRF in the assessment of pituitary secretory function in women with abnormal responses to oestrogen positive feedback.

    Notes: SUMMARY. The drift of chironomid egg masses was investigated in the River Mole (Devon) and the River Wye (Powys) in 1981. Large numbers of egg masses were found in the drift just after dusk; on one occasion an estimated 50,000 egg masses passed a sampling point in 5 h. Oviposition of free-floating egg masses appeared to be initiated and synchronized by the onset of darkness. Egg masses of some Pentaneurini (Tanypodinae), Tanytarsini and Chironomini (Chironominae) were found in the drift and adhering to submerged stones.Flotation by means of a gas vacuole within the egg mass was observed in the Polypedilum ‘convictum’ group. The gas vacuole decreased in size over 8–11 h and the egg masses sank after 2–3h.Some chironomid egg masses are capable of drifting large distances after oviposition. The implications of sueh drift are briefly discussed in relation to the distribution of chironomid larvae.

    Notes: At Theaetetus 163d-164b Socrates objects to the thesis that knowledge is perception by pointing out that a man who has seen something can still remember it, and so has knowledge of it; but this is impossible, if knowledge is perception, since he is no longer perceiving it.To this Protagoras is made to reply with two sentences at 166b 1–4:[...] [...].Cornford translates ‘ For instance, do you think you will find anyone to admit that one's present memory of a past impression is an impression of the same character as one had during the original experience, which is now over? It is nothing of the sort’.Cornford understands this as the suggestion that the memory and the original perception are of different things: ‘ All that the objection in fact established was that “ perception” must be stretched to include awareness of memory images’. So too Lee: ‘Protagoras’ “way out”... appears to be to say that what we now know is not properly X but rather (say) our memory trace of X - some present πά θ ο ς (Y) quite distinct from X (or, more exactly, from our earlier perception of X: Protagoras must thoroughly subjectivize the matter) and very different from that (perhaps along Humean lines of vividness and the like)’.     Notes: Summary Physiological responses were measured in 7 women subjects who lifted boxes weighing 6.8, 15.9 or 22.7 kg from the floor to a height of 60 cm. After training and establishing the $$\dot V$$ O2 max, the boxes were lifted for 1 h at 30, 50, and 60% $$\dot V$$ O2 max. The changes in heart rate, $$\dot V$$ O2, the integrated EMG during lifting and the loss of isometric hand-grip endurance after lifting were used to assess the development of fatigue. There was no evidence of fatigue at 30% $$\dot V$$ O2 max but fatigue did exist in some conditions at 50% and in all conditions at 60% $$\dot V$$ O2 max. It is suggested that fatigue is unlikely to occur while lifting boxes up to 15.9 kg weight at 35–40% $$\dot V$$ O2 max, i.e., at rates of lifting varying from 5 to 7 times per min.
