Notes: Abstract Elastic scattering differential cross section data ofπ ± d at 65 MeV andπ ± 4He at 51 MeV are presented and compared respectively to fully relativistic 3-body and optical potential calculations including true pion absorption.

Notes: Summary Forty-three patients with a history of recurrent urinary infections, many of whom had renal involvement and had recently failed treatment, were then treated with pivmecillinam (400 mg 8-hourly for seven days). One week after the end of treatment the bacteriological cure rate was 72.1%. During the following four weeks, however, several of the cured patients relapsed, so that the cure rate five weeks after the end of treatment was only 46%. Thus, it is recommended that such patients should begin prophylactic treatment if found to be abacteriuric after the one week follow-up. Pivmecillinam was extremely well tolerated.

Notes: Summary Eighty-nine patients with a history of recurrent urinary infection who required immediate treatment for significant bacteriuria were treated with either trimethoprim (300 mg at night) or with the standard course of co-trimoxazole (two tablets 12-hourly) for seven days. Cure rates one week after the end of treatment were 74.4% and 80.4%, respectively. During the following month the relapse rate was lower in the group given trimethoprim than among those who had received co-trimoxazole. Consequently, the cure rates six weeks after the start of treatment were 71.4% in the trimethoprim group and 58.5% in the co-trimoxazole group. These results suggest that in this type of patient, it may be possible to reduce the incidence of bacteriological relapse by giving antibiotics in larger doses and at less frequent intervals than are at present generally recommended.

Notes: Abstract Two experiments were conducted to investigate the use of a pheromone-based trap-out technique for suppressing populations ofScolytus multistriatus. In the first experiment, elm bolts containing the immature stages ofS. multistriatus were placed in an isolated community that contained elm trees, but which was essentially devoid of a resident beetle population. The infested bolts produced a total of 46,485 adult beetles of which 20% were recovered on traps baited with synthetic pheromone. In the second experiment beetles were released in a desert valley containing no resident elms or beetles. Only 1% of 20,000 released beetles were recaptured on traps erected on vertical cardboard cylinders and on elm logs. These rates of recapture are related to the attraction of beetles to naturally occurring brood sources versus pheromone-baited traps.
