    Notes: Summary Rats were trained preoperatively on contingently reinforced delayed alternation in a T-maze. Then different matched groups of rats received lesions in the prelimbic cortex, mediodorsal thalamus, posterodorsal septum (aimed at transecting the precommissural fornix), and control operations (no brain lesions). Following a 2-week recovery period the rats were retested in the T-maze for retention of delayed alternation. Control rats were unaffected by the control operations and the testing hiatus of the recovery period. Rats with lesions in the prelimbic cortex performed at chance levels on the first postoperative session as did rats with posterodorsal septal lesions, but both groups recovered with continued experience, i.e., they could relearn the task. Rats with lesions in mediodorsal thalamus were only slightly affected by the lesions, The results suggest that a restricted field in the medial pregenual cortex, the prelimbic area, is critically involved in T-maze alternation. However, the data also suggest that a major subcortical source of afferents to prelimbic cortex, the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus, is not crucial for retention of delayed alternation. Impairment in retention of contingently reinforced T-maze delayed alternation following interference with septo-hippocampal circuitry is consistent with data previously reported.

    Notes: Summary The clinical, angiocardiographic, and surgical findings in a cyanotic child with dextrocardia, L-loop, laterally inverted but otherwise normally related great arteries, and situs ambiguus are described and compared with other similar cases. Electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, and angiographic data are reviewed, and thesegmental approach to diagnosis is stressed. Both systemic and pulmonary veins returned to the right-sided atrium. Blood then passed either through the mitral valve to the morphologically left ventricle and to the aorta or through an atrial septal defect to a small left-sided atrium, right ventricle, and pulmonary artery. Total correction was undertaken with an intra-atrial baffle to direct pulmonary venous return to the morphologically right ventricle and systemic venous return to the right ventricle. The subpulmonic stenosis was alleviated with an outflow patch.

    Notes: Abstract The explicit function of the community matrix of a three dimensional Lotka-Volterra model is delineated by a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for a positive equilibrium to be asymptotically stable. In the special case that the community matrix is quasi weakly diagonally dominant, it is shown that a positive determinant for the community matrix is not only necessary but is also sufficient for stability. The results are specific to three dimensional models and do not extend to communities of dimension greater than three.
