Notes: Abstract The origin of acoustic emission (AE) in 7075 aluminium alloy was investigated in tension and compression tests. It is suggested that the first peak associated with the root-mean-square (rms) AE plot against time (or strain) is due to the unpinning of dislocation segments from solute atom clusters and is not due to the fracture of particles. Alteration in the value of the AE first peak and also in electrical resistivity values due to heat treatment of this alloy support the proposed origin of the AE first peak near yield.

Notes: Abstract A microduplex stainless steel (25.7 wt% Cr-6.6 wt% Ni) was investigated to examine grain growth during static annealing and superplastic deformation at 1000° C. The grain size at a constant strain rate of 1×10−4 sec−1 increases according to d∼8t 0.49 where d is the grain size and t is the time (in min) involved in deformation. Under the present test condition, the contribution of both static (time, t S) and dynamic (strain, ε) annealing appear to be significant and can be expressed by d∞ 0.19ε0.29. While the exponent of the first term is constant, the exponent of the second term may depend on the strain rate. Strain rate sensitivities were evaluated from differential strain rate tests for different initial grain sizes. Both strain rate sensitivity and grain size were noticed to increase with deformation.

Notes: Dehydrochlorinated poly(vinyl chloride)-g-polystyrene (DHPVC-g-PSt) prepared by free radical grafting was characterized, and some of its physical properties were evaluated. The presence of graft was established by the appearance of new absorption peaks in the IR spectra of the graft copolymer. GPC analysis showed increase in the average molecular weights of the graft copolymer upon increase in the PSt content. Besides, GPC revealed the uniform PSt distribution of DHPVC-g-PSt. A marked improvement in the thermal stability of DHPVC-g-PSt over that of DHPVC and DHPVC/PSt blends was observed. Graft copolymers with high percent grafting were thermally more stable than even the original PVC. Stress-strain data indicated decrease in yield stress, breaking stress and elongation, along with an increase in the initial modulus, upon increase in PSt content of the graft copolymer.

Notes: Dehydrochlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (DHPVC) was graft copolymerized with styrene monomer using benzoyl peroxide (Bz2O2) as free radical initiator, in vacuum. The effect of synthesis conditions such as time, initiator concentration, the ratio of monomer to polymer, and temperature on various grafting parameters was studied. On the whole, a maximum of 47 wt % polystyrene (PSt) in the graft (DHPVC-g-PSt) was obtained. PSt contents of graft copolymers determined by gravimetry, chlorine analysis, and UV spectroscopy have been compared. A “grafting from” mechanism has been proposed for the graft copolymerization.

Notes: Nylon 6-g-polyacrylamide graft copolymer prepared by photoinduced initiation was characterized and some of its properties were evaluated. Intrinsic viscosity of the graft copolymer increased continously with percent grafting. Thermal stability decreased corresponding to the increase in add-on %. The moisture regain, diameter, and density showed an increase with percent grafting. The acid dyeability of the graft copolymer decreased with increase in graft level, whereas the disperse dye uptake increased initially up to a graft add-on of 28.9% and then showed a decrease.

Notes: Thermal Properties of methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and n-butyl methacrylate (n-BMA) grafted onto nylon 6 fibre with various graft levels were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) and the results compared with that of parent nylon 6 fibre. It was found that the initial decomposition temperatures (IDT) of the grafted samples were lower than that of the parent nylon 6 fibre. On the other hand with all the three monomers, there was an increase in overall thermal stability followed by subsequent decrease with increase in the graft level. Among the grafted samples both the IDT and IPDT (initial procedural decomposition temperature) followed the order MMA-g nylon 〉 EMA-g nylon 〈 n-BMA-g nylonDifferential thermal analysis shows a depression in glass transition temperature (Tg) as well as in melting temperature (Tm). In the case of the MMA and EMA grafted samples, the depression is small over a wide range of graft level. In the case of the n-BMA grafted samples, the depression is higher. A wide melting range was obtained in the grafted samples. Flammability studies also showed that with an increase in the graft level as well as an increase in the alkyl chain the ease of flammability increased as expressed by limiting oxygen index (LOI) values. The possible reasons for the phenomena occurred have been discussed.
