Notes: Summary When rats were kept in continuous light there was a time-lag between the onset of activity arrhythmia and that of persistent estrus. When animals showing both arrhythmias in continuous light were kept under a LD 21∶3 photoperiod, the activity rhythm returned to normal but the estrous cycle did not.

Notes: Summary The localization of serotonin(5HT)-containing subependymal cells was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. The 5HT-containing subependymal cells were predominantly located in the paraventricular organ, while a small number of them were situated in the nucleus infundibularis dorsalis. The basal processes of these 5HT cells of the paraventricular organ appeared to have contact with the wall of blood vessels. The result was discussed in comparison with that obtained by the formaldehyde induced fluorescence (FIF) method.

Notes: Summary Two types of monoamine-containing subependymal cells were studied microspectrofluorometrically and electron microscopically. Microspectrofluorometric analyzes showed that yellow fluorescent cells contained 5HT and blue-green fluorescent cells dopamine (DA). These two types of fluorescent cells could be recognized also in a thin section (about 250 nm thick) mounted on a reference grid. Electron microscopy of the same section revealed that electron dense granules in the 5HT-containing cells are larger (80–140 nm) in size than those in the DA-containing cells (60–100 nm).

Notes: Abstract We examined the architecture of the choriocapillaris in enucleated human eyes by flat preparation using trypsin digestion and corrosion cast technique by injecting methacrylate into the vortex vein. The choriocapillaris in the posterior fundus had a distinct lobular pattern of about 600μ in diameter. An arteriole entered the lobule at its center, and a ring of collector capillaries surrounded the lobule. In the equatorial and more peripheral fundus, arterioles and veins were located in the plane of the choriocapillaris, and the choriocapillaris was segmental in arrangement.

Notes: Abstract This note is concerned with the generalization of Farkas' theorem of the alternative and its application to derive the necessary optimality conditions for min-max problems with satisfaction conditions. Farkas' theorem is generalized to a system of linear inequalities with max operations. The problems studied require a solution at which the worst objective value attains its minimum over a set of solutions fulfilling satisfaction conditions. The satisfaction conditions claim that plural performance criteria should be kept below the permissible level, whatever disturbances may happen or whatever opponents' decisions may be taken. We present a generalized Farkas' theorem in order to derive the necessary optimality conditions for the problems of this class.

Notes: Compositions and elemental distributions of anodic films formed on aluminium in aqueous borate electrolytes have been investigated by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) and associated nuclear reaction methods, together with controlled crystallization of film sections in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Films were found to consist principally of Al2O3; the outer regions of the films were contaminated with boron and, for all cases studied, the inner regions were boron-free. In the absence of film dissolution the contaminated region represented approximately 40% of the film thickness, and this proportion did not vary significantly with changes in current density of film formation. The outer region contained about 1.5 wt% boron, probably as B2O3, and the densities of the inner and outer regions were similar to an accuracy of about 10%.

Notes: Stopping powers of an anodic film, formed on aluminium in aqueous ammonium pentaborate solution, have been measured experimentally for α particles, over the energy range 0.7-2.3 MeV. Comparison between the measured stopping powers and theoretically calculated values shows that Bragg's Rule may be applied, with reasonable accuracy (∼5%), to predict the stopping powers of anodic alumina. The density of the barrier-type film was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy to be 3.10±0.15 × 103 kg m-3.
