Notes: Abstract The nucleus24Na has been investigated by studying the gamma-rays emitted following thermal neutron capture in23Na, with curved crystal and Ge(Li) spectrometers. Of the 277 transitions assigned to24Na, 216 were placed in the24Na level scheme containing 45 levels, of which six (1,961, 1,977, 3,866, 5,810, 5,918, and 6,222 keV) are reported for the first time. An average gamma-ray multiplicity of 3.3 gammas per neutron capture was observed. The neutron binding energy was determined to be 6,959.73 (14) keV. The resulting level scheme is compared to shell and rotational model predictions.

Notes: Abstract Improved neutron binding and excitation energies in205, 207, 208Pb, relative to the 412 keV gold standard, have been deduced from the measurements of gamma-ray energies following thermal neutron capture. Neutron binding energies of 6,731.57(15), 6,737.76(18), 7,367.87(11) keV for205, 207, 208Pb, respectively, were determined.

Notes: Abstract The gamma-ray spectrum emitted following thermal neutron capture in19F has been studied with curved crystal and Ge(Li) spectrometers. From the 109 transitions assigned to20F, 85 have been placed in a level scheme containing 26 levels. An average gammaray multiplicity of 2.8 gammas per neutron capture was observed. The neutron binding energy was found to be 6601.33(14) keV. The experimental level scheme is compared to rotational model predictions. In addition it is shown that the decay of the capture state is non-statistical and that there is a strong correlation between the strengths of excitation of levels by the (n, γ) and (d, p) reactions. Calculations of the partial cross-sections using the direct capture theory of Lane and Lynn give order of magnitude agreement with experiment.

Notes: Abstract Photographic averaging of cine-camera data-frames from the 7 March 1970 eclipse provided a record of the inner white light corona with unusually high resolution for low-contrast features. We report that a coronal void, similar to high corona structures associated with prominence formation (MacQueen et al., 1983), extended low into the corona. During eclipse totality, a coronal rain prominence condensed from the base of the void.

Notes: Summary Pseudomonas sp. cells have been entrapped in alginate and chitosan beads. The latter had better mechanical stability, while the phenylalanine hydroxylation was faster in alginate. The immobilized cells were viable, and the halflife of their activity was at least 20 days. Conditions for the total conversion of phe to tyr (43 μMol/g beads·h) are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The long-term variation of the mean δ13C-value of breath-CO2 of Europeans (base value −26‰) was ±1‰ over a period of several months. However, the ingestion of products from corn, a C4-plant, caused remarkably higher shifts. In a fasted state and during rest a stability of the base value of ±0.3‰ could be attained for several hours. Longer fasting periods imply a shift of the CO2-δ-value due to the metabolism of body products. — By a change of the main energy source to corn products the δ13C-base line could be shifted to −18‰ within one day. After this shift even the metabolism of products from C3-plants could be investigated. The degradation curve and the integral degradation of fats were largely dependent on the method of application, and the base value largely interfered with the results. The period of maximum disintegration for a naturally and uniformly labelled fat was different from that of an artificially labelled trilinoleate. The results shall be used for the adjustment and the correction of the base line in13C-breath tests, especially with patients under parenteral nutrition.

Notes: Abstract The even-even isotopes of Yb are good probes for solid state investigations by Mössbauer spectroscopy. A disadvantage of the commonly used170Yb is its low natural abundance of only 3%. We have developed a new source for Mössbauer spectroscopy with174Yb which is superior to170 Yb not only because of the higher isotopic abundance (32%) but also in resolution and f-factor.

Notes: Abstract Amorphous alloys Yb80X20 (X=Cu,Ag,Au) have been investigated by174Yb Mössbauer spectroscopy. Samples have been prepared by sputtering and by roller quenching for all 3 alloys. For the materials studied, the distribution of the quadrupole splitting parameter δQ and of the asymmetry parameter η, corresponds to the distribution expected for a dense random packing model. No significant differences between the results for quenched and for sputtered samples were found.

Notes: This paper deals with the perturbation theory of an n-electron Hamiltonian of the general form H = ∑n ƒ(i) + λ∑n g(i, j) = H (f, g; n). In comparison to the Brueckner-Goldstone diagrammatic perturbation theory, we adopt the more general standpoint of admitting, for the construction of an n-particle state, component states of 1, 2, 3, and more particles [O. Sinanoglu, Phys. Rev. 122, 493 (1961) and C. D. H. Chisholm and A. Dalgarno, Proc. R. Soc. (London) Sec. A 292, 264 (1966)]. We show that this leads to the concept of a “partition” of a perturbational eigenstate (or energy) of H. A “partition” is a natural decomposition which: (i) is finite; (ii) relates the eigenvalue problem of the system H = H (f, g; n) to those of certain subsystems H (f, g; n1)(n1 〈 n); (iii) uses “nonseparable” components. We domonstrate (under the preliminary assumption of “strict” nondegeneracy) the second-order energy to possess a “partition.” The components therein are second-order energies of two- and three-particle states. The proof uses an extension of Racah's concept of the fractional-parentage expansion.
