Notes: The development of middle-ear structures in the mouse was examined in nine groups of pups between 1 and 45 days of age. The area of the tympanic membrane (pars tensa and pars flaccida), the length of the lever arms of the malleus and incus, the surface area of the oval window, and the volume of the bulla all showed systematic changes during neonatal life. The area of the oval window reached maturity first and the lever arms achieved 90% of their adult size on day 11. The tympanic membrane achieved the same criterion on day 18. These data help us further to understand the processes that contribute to the functional ontogeny of the middle ear.

Notes: Dynamic mechanical experiments have been conducted on an epoxy system made with tetraglycidyl 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) and polyglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A Novalac that were cured with 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) in the presence of Boron trifluoride monoethylamine catalyst (BF3:EtNH2). As the concentration of BF3:EtNH2 increased, the low temperature β-transition magnitude increased slightly. The α1-transition observed in the uncatalyzed system decreased significantly with the addition of BF3:EtNH2 catalyst. The α2 or glass transition temperature of this system increased with increasing catalyst concentration. Both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed epoxy formulations studied in this work are important due to their similarity to systems used commercially in epoxy matrix composites.

Notes: Pulsed 5.66-GHz microwave energy irradiated a model of a human hand that was positioned above a submerged planar array of 400 hydrophones. Hydrophone response data were analyzed by a computer that graphically reproduced the image.

Notes: Isokinetic muscle testing has become an increasingly popular method for measuring muscle performance. However, the relationship of isokinetic strength measurements to static strength measurements remains unclear. The relationship between maximal isokinetic and maximal isometric torque was investigated at angular velocities of 24, 48, 96, and 192°/s for both flexion and extension of the elbow joint. Twenty-four subjects were tested bilaterally, and discrete torque values at the positions of 60 and 90° of flexion were obtained from the continuous isokinetic records for comparison with isometric torques recorded at the same two positions. Data were analyzed using an analysis of covariance with isokinetic torque, the dependent variable, expressed as a function of isometric torque and as a function of the design variables side and position. The results demonstrated significant effects of side and position and also demonstrated the dependence of isokinetic strength on velocity. Confidence intervals were determined for the prediction of isokinetic torque from observed isometric torque for normal individuals, providing a potentially useful tool to aid in the diagnosis of muscular disorders.

Notes: Raman spectra have been obtained for bleomycin A2 and selected fragments. Virtually all of the features in the bleomycin Raman spectrum can be attributed to the preresonance enhanced vibrational transitions of the 2,4′-bithiazole moiety as determined by comparison to the Raman spectra of bithiazole fragments. The Raman spectrum of bleomycin is dominated by a very intense band at 1542 cm-1 that can be approximately assigned as a bithiazole ring stretching mode. This feature may serve as a probe of bithiazole environment in bleomysin -DNA interactions.
