Notes: Not only during his lifetime but for some years after his death Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling remained a figure of controversy. Few academic philosophers have been more execrated by their opponents, since with him intellectual differences quickly turned into personal animosities. That this was so was not simply his ill–luck; Schelling was always an ‘awkward customer’ to deal with. His vanity, which was inordinate, was no doubt basically temperamental, but it had been stimulated by the remarkable literary success of his early years, in which he appeared before the world as a prodigy. Increasingly touchy and irritable as he grew older, the least criticism struck him as a personal affront and disagreement as intended injury. The bitterness of his response, to intellectual equals and inferiors alike, was almost invariably such as to end in severed relationships. Thus he quarrelled in turn with Jacobi, with Fichte and with Friedrich Schlegel, as well as with lesser lights such as Baader and Eschenmayer, and even with his own pupils –J. J. Wagner, Krause, Stahl, Kohn and others. Those who managed to stay on good terms with him – men like Windischmann, Victor Cousin and his own publisher Cotta – had to learn to put up with his rancour. But of all with whom he fell foul the most eminent was Hegel, whom he regarded as his arch–enemy. The reason, little creditable to Schelling, is not far to seek. Originally fellow–students at Tübingen, they later became colleagues at Jena, where Schelling, the younger of the two, had already acquired national fame. By contrast the future author of the Phenomenology of Spirit was evidently as yet no more than a worthy but hardly scintillating collaborator with his academic senior in running a philosophical journal.

Notes: Abstract Addition of pyrophosphate stimulated sulphate uptake and utilization of volatile fatty acids by anaerobic freshwater sediments. Population estimates of sulphate-reducing bacteria demonstrated that a larger number were capable of utilizing acetate then lactate. Estimates increased when pyrophosphate was added to the medium and decreased by the same degree when the sediment was heated. Addition of molybdate to the sulphate-limited sediments stimulated rather than inhibited methanogenesis. The results suggest that the sediment contains a metabolically active population of acetate-utilizing members of the genus Desulfotomaculum.

Notes: Abstract Carefully selected head and neck tumor patients can safely undergo a wide variety of aesthetic surgical procedures. The malignancy must first be adequately treated and clinically controlled before elective surgery. Each tumor patient's general health and life expectancy must be honestly assessed prior to aesthetic surgery, because operating on an individual who cannot survive to enjoy the benefits is injudicious. Through the combined efforts of sophisticated oncology and plastic surgery, the patient survival rate can be improved as quality of life is enriched in appropriately selected and carefully managed individuals.

Notes: Abstract We have used a combination of chromosome-mediated gene transfer and microcell fusion techniques to transfer Chinese hamster chromosome 1 to mouse cells. Microcell hybrids containing a single hamster chromosome were analyzed to map genes on this chromosome. We have confirmed the assignment of seven markers (GSR, NP, EST-D, ADK, PEP-S, PGM2, and PEP-B) to hamster chromosome 1. Segregation among the linked markers was induced by X irradiation followed by selection for the retention or loss of human hprt. Cosegregation of markers in independent subclones made it possible to determine the gene order for the seven loci. The gene order proposed for these loci is as follows: pter-GSR-NP-EST-D-ADK-(PEP-S, PGM2)-PEP-B-qter. In addition GSR, NP, EST-D,and ADKhave been assigned to pter-1q12; PEP-Sand PGM2to 1q12–1q21, and PEP-Bto 1q32-1qter. These regional assignments and gene order on chromosome 1 have provided the information relevant to the linkages conserved between Chinese hamster, mouse, and man.
