Notes: : Of 26 patients infested with Stronglyoides stercoralis 10 (38.5%) were asymptomatic without systemic or cutaneous signs. Nine patients (34.6%) presented with systemic complaints only and seven patients (26.9%) had systemic and cutaneous manifestations. Further observations of the skin lesions on four of those with systemic and cutaneous manifestations revealed linear urticarial bands, extending to several centimeters within 1 hour and persisting up to many days, waiting and waning. Blood examination showed eosinophilia in all patients. These findings confirm the concept that larva currens even alone should be considered a cutaneous sign of systemic disease.

Notes: Kuwait, situated in the north-west corner of the Arabian Gulf, has an arid climate with very hot dry summers and mild winters. Sandstorms are a regular climatic feature. occurring most frequently in summer. Before the mid-1950s allergy was not considered to be a problem. Since then it has become a major cause of morbidity; 18% of the population are reported to suffer from its manifestations. Over the past 3 years 1000 asthmatic patients attending a central clinic have been carefully studied. The present paper analyses various aspects of the asthmatic condition in this desert country.

Notes: Abstract The biosynthesis and macromolecular organization of proteoglycans was studied in explants of adult human articular cartilage. In a series of pulse-chase experiments, labelling with (35S)sulphate, it was shown that the proteoglycan monomer is synthesized as a precursor that has a low affinity for hyaluronic acid. These findings suggest a possible mechanism by which the rate of incorporation of proteoglycans into the extraceHular matrix may be controlled.

Notes: Summary By the use of scanningand transmission electron microscopy, the possible sources of errors in interpretation of the microcirculation of the pancreas can be reduced in comparison to the classical India-ink injection method. Sphincter-like structures in the capillary wall of the cat pancreas are established by pericytes. These sphincters encircle the junctional zones between the endocrine and exocrine capillaries. They are assumed to be regulatory structures of blood flow and to regulate indirectly hormone secretion according to demand.

Notes: Summary A needle wound was made in the adult rat cerebral cortex. Responses of neurons and oligodendrocytes at the site of injury were followed over a period of 450 days and correlations made between morphological and enzyme cytochemical changes to clarify some phenomena previously unresolved. Evidence from acid phosphatase activity in degenerating neurons showed no increase in the number of cytochemically stained lysosomal profiles nor changes in the subcellular localization of the acid phosphatase reaction product. Our observations indicated that the majority of dying neurons were not digested by their own acid phosphatase ‘autodigestion’ but by the process of heterodigestion. The time-course study revealed that not all the traumatized neurons were eliminated but some persisted permanently in an attenuated ‘atrophic’ state. The atrophic neurons were small in size with low cytoplasmic-nuclear ratios and exhibited low levels of glucose-6-phosphatase and cytochrome oxidase activities. The acid phosphatase activity was slightly increased as evidenced by cytochemically stained hypertrophic Golgi cisternae and a slight increase in the number of lysosomes. The low level of enzyme activities, concerned with carbohydrate metabolism reflected the low metabolic activity in atrophic neurons whilst an increase in Golgi-lysosomal enzyme activity suggested some anabolic process necessary for their survival. Oligodendrocytes displayed only minor changes in morphology, and their glucose-6-phosphatase and cytochrome oxidase activities were normal, suggesting that these cells have little or no involvement in the repair of a cerebral wound. The absence of significant changes in lysosomal acid phosphatase activity indicated a minimal role, if any, of oligodendrocytes in the process of phagocytosis.

Notes: Abstract Nondestructive neutron activation analysis has been used for the analysis of 17 out of 24 elements in 12 samples of air particulate matter collected from various localities in Benghazi. Both relative and monostandard methods were used. The neutron activation method was supplemented with graphite furnace atomic absorption, so that most toxic elements could be assayed in the same samples. Thus Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn could be analysed quantitatively in most of the samples. It has been found that contamination of the atmosphere of Benghazi with dust is largely due to heavy construction work in the city, action of wind on the surface of land around the city and the release of exhaust products from vehicles and airplanes. Particular contamination due to industrial activities was not noticeable. Results on samples from Benghazi were compared with those from Prague, Munich and Sendai.
