Notes: [Auszug] Deletion experiments have defined two stretches of DNA (genetic elements), lying close to the promoter for a human gene for metallothionein, that separately mediate the induction of the gene by heavy metal ions, particularly cadmium, and by glucocorticoid hormones. The element responsible for ...

Notes: Abstract 4- and 4′-methoxy-, 4-hydroxy- and 2-hydroxychalcone4 e,k,f andg, respectively, are transformed by action of guanidine in benzene to yield 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-phenyl-2-pyrimidinamine (6 e=6 k) and hydroxyphenylpyrimidinamines6 f andg, respectively. In contrast, 4- and 4′-chlor-, 4′-brom- and 4′-phenylchalcone4 h,l–n resp. react with guanidine under analogous conditions to give 4,6-diaryl-1,4-dihydro-2-pyrimidinamines5 h,l–n. The bases5 h,l–n also tend to aromatize, but they can be stabilized by transformation into salts5 h,l–n · HCl with hydrochloric acid. Heating of5 n inDMF under atmospheric oxygen yields 4-(4-biphenyl)-6-phenyl-2-pyrimidinamine (6 n). Action of guanidine on 4′-nitrochalcone4 o in chloroform affords 2-amino-4-nitrophenyl-6-phenyl-tetrahydro-4-pyrimidinol8 o, which is transformed by hydrochloric acid into 6-nitrophenyl-dihydropyrimidinamine-hydrochloride5 o · HCl. Treating of the latter with sodiummethylat in methanol yields the very stable dihydropyrimidinamine5 o. Action of guanidine on 4-chlor- and 4′-bromchalcone4 h andm respectively (in addition to5 h andm) yields 2,4,6,8-tetraaryl-1,4-dihydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidines7 h andm, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The contrast evoked potentials (VEPs) to different check sizes were recorded in about 200 cases of discrete optic neuropathies (ON) of different origin. Differential light threshold (DLT) was tested with the computer perimeter OCTOPUS. Saturated and desaturated tests were applied to evaluate the degree of acquired color vision deficiency. Delayed VEP responses are not confined to optic neuritis (RBN) alone and the different latency times obtained from other ON are confluent. The delay may be due to demyelination, to an increasing dominance of paramacular VEP subcomponents or to an increasing dominance of the upper half-field responses. Recording with smaller check sizes has the advantage that discrete dysfunctions in the visual field (VF) center are more easily detected: a correlation between amplitudes and visual acuity is best in strabismic amblyopias, is less expressed in maculopathies of the retina and weak in ON. The absence or reduction of amplitudes to smaller check sizes, however, is an important indication of a disorder in the VF center of ON in an early or recovered stage. Acquired color vision defects of the tritan-like type are more confined to discrete ON, whereas the red/green type is reserved to more severe ON. The DLT of the VF center is reduced in a different, significant and non significant extent in discrete optic neuropathies and the correlation between DLT and visual acuity is weak. A careful numerical analysis is needed in types of discrete ON where the central DLT lies within normal statistical limits: a side difference of the DLT between the affected and the normal fellow eye is always present. Evaluation of visual fatigue effects and of the relative sensitivity loss of VF center and VF periphery may provide further diagnostic information.

Notes: Abstract A theory of the origin and evolution of the Solar System (Alfvén and Arrhenius, 1975, 1976) which considered electromagnetic forces and plasma effects is revised in the light of new information supplied by space research. In situ measurements in the magnetospheres and solar wind have changed our views of basic properties of cosmic plasmas. These results can be extrapolated both outwards in space, to interstellar clouds, and backwards in time, to the formation of the solar system. The first extrapolation leads to a revision of some cloud properties which are essential for the early phases in the formation of stars and solar nebulae. The latter extrapolation makes possible to approach the cosmogonic processes by extrapolation of (rather) well-known magnetospheric phenomena. Pioneer-Voyager observations of the Saturnian rings indicate that essential parts of their structure are ‘fossils’ from cosmogonic times. By using detailed information from these space missions, it seems possible to reconstruct certain events 4–5 billion years ago with an accuracy of a few percent. This will cause a change in our views of the evolution of the solar system.
