    Notes: Abstract The sporangiophore (spph) of a piloboloid mutant, genotype pil, of Phycomyces ceases elongation and expands radially in the growth zone shortly after reaching the developmental stage IV b. The pil spph is always negatively phototropic to unilateral visible light when its diameter exceeds 210 μm. Photoinduction of spph initiation, light-growth response, threshold of light energy fluence rate for the negative phototropism, avoidance and gravitropism in the pil mutant are all normal. In liquid paraffin, the pil spph shows negative phototropism as does the wild-type spph. Genetic analyses indicate that the negative phototropism of the pil mutant is governed by the phenotypic characteristics of pil but not by specific gene(s) responsible for negative phototropism. These facts imply that the reverse phototropism of the pil mutant results from a loss of the convergent lens effect of the cell because of the increase in cell diameter.

    Notes: Summary Human rotavirus “KUN” strain was cultivated in a fetal rhesus monkey kidney cell line, MA 104 cells. Four types of virus particles in cells infected with KUN strain were clearly identified: nucleoid cores, single-shelled particles, double-shelled particles, and membrane band, “enveloped” particles. “Enveloped” particles were found only in the thin sections of infected cells. When first visible, the virus precursors appeared at the ribosome free membrane of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), increasing in size while simultaneously being coated with nucleocapsid, inner shell. Single-shelled particles were also synthesized within bundles of filaments of viroplasm in the cytoplasma. During subsequent virus maturation two types of “budding” processes were observed. Double-shelled particles arising at the RER membrane entered the cisternae of the RER through an exocytosis-like process. In contrast, the “enveloped” particles developed in the cisternae by being completely enclosed with RER membrane, and later during cytolysis released the single-shelled particles. These “enveloped” virus particles appeared to be the result of inefficient virus maturation at the last stage of outer capsid formation.

    Notes: Abstract Inclusive Λ production in $$\bar p$$ p interactions at 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 GeV/c is studied. The inclusive cross sections for Λ and Λ $$\bar \Lambda $$ production are measured. The differential cross sections as functions ofx, y, andP T 2 are given for each beam momentum. It is found that the contribution of indirect production of Λ from resonance decay is considerably enhanced in the region of higher missing mass against Λ. The negative polarization is observed for Λ with largerP T and lower missing mass, and is found to be mainly from two body reactions. Inclusive cross sections for∑ ±(1385) production and the fraction of indirect Λ from∑ ±(1385) decay are measured. The ratio between the cross sections for∑ +(1385) and∑ −(1385) productions is found to be almost constant for wide range of beam momenta.

    Notes: Abstract InclusiveK s 0 andK s 0 K s 0 production in $$\bar pp$$ interactions at 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 GeV/c are studied. Cross sections ofK s 0 , K s 0 K s 0 andK *±(892) are presented for each incident momentum. The production ofK s 0 andK *±(892) through annihilation process is investigated. It is found that the annihilation process is dominant but decreases with incident momentum. The annihilation process is compared withe + e − interactions. Remarkable similarity between them is found in the $${{x_0 = 2E(K_s^0 )} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{x_0 = 2E(K_s^0 )} {\sqrt s }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt s }}$$ distribution. Events with two detectedK s 0 's are analyzed. The result shows theK s 0 K s 0 pairs are produced in the central region of c.m. system and there is a clearS * signal in theK s 0 K s 0 effective mass distribution.

The processes include methods of sorption, ion exchange and solvent extraction. In the early stage of polymerization, very fine polymer particles of plutonium are formed. The fraction of the larger particles increases with aging.

    Notes: Abstract Non-destructive photon activation analysis with 30-MeV bremsstrahlung has been applied for the determination of zirconium in biological materials. The materials investigated were the NBS SRMs Orchard Leaves and Bovine Liver, and various tissues of rats. The detection limits of this method for a 2 h irradiation are 0.1 μg for Orchard Leaves, 0.04 μg for Bovine Liver and animal tissues. The zirconium contents of animal tissues obtained in this work appear to be significantly lower than the values reported earlier. New data on zirconium in the NBS SRMs are presented.
