Notes: Summary A critical approach is taken to the measurement of soil invertase (β-D-fructofuranoside fructohydrolase) activities with particular emphasis on substrate concentration, buffers and pH. The results emphasize that the choice of substrate concentration is less contentious than the choice, or even use, of buffers. A suggestion is made for the adoption of assay methods which would allow direct comparisons to be made between invertase activities in different soils.
