Notes: Kinetics of liquid water sorption by soybean (Glycine max) and pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) seeds was studied at several temperatures. The data could be accurately correlated in terms of an empirical model involving a single rate constant. The temperature dependence of the rate constant followed Arrhenius relation. Swelling of grains due to water sorption was slightly less than the volume of water imbibed. This loss related to the energy of activation of the water sorption process.

Notes: In order to facilitate studies on oral mucosa a simplified method for the culture of oral epithelial cells from adult hamsters was developed. Cheek pouches were excised and epithelial cells isolated by collagenase digestion. These were grown in CM-V medium containing spermine in order to inhibit overgrowth of the epithelial cells by fibroblasts. The epithelial cells were subcultured by routine tissue culture procedures. The cells isolated were examined by light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Morphologically the cells were typical of epithelial cells. Ultrastructural examination showed structures typical of epithelia including filaments, keratohyalin granules and desmosomal junctions. The culture system provides epithelial cells that can be used for a variety of biochemical and morphological studies.

Notes: The management of public affairs in northeast India has been in focus in the regional, national and world press in recent years. Much of the attention has been confined to insurgency, the ‘foreign nationals’ issue, tribal ‘uprisings’, ‘brutalities’ committed by the security forces, ‘involvement’ of foreign agencies in the area, political ‘horse-trading’ and floods. There has been no analysis of the economic, cultural and demographic factors which have acquired different nuances in the wake of the rapid modernization taking place in the region since the 1950s and which have a decisive say on the formulation of policies and the efficacy of institutions of governance in northeast India. This paper proposes to offer some facts and reflections on these aspects.

Notes: Summary The hypoxic cytotoxic effect of chlorpromazine towardsE. coli B/r was observed to be dependent on temperature of incubation and irradiation. Increasing the temperature of incubation from ambient to 37° C followed by irradiation revealed that the organisms showed radiosensitivity of a magnitude which was two to three times the oxygen effect. The possible mechanisms of this effect are discussed.

Notes: Abstract It is proved that the only circulation preserving magnetogeostrophic flows whose current density is lamellar, and bears a constant on a current density vector have (1) a plane motion of constant current density (on which certain unsteady potential motions may be superposed) and (2) a particular circular helical motion.

Notes: Summary The relative viabilities of homozygous and heterozygous karyotypes were measured by making crosses between strains ofD. ananassae homozygous for ST or inverted gene orders in the second and third chromosomes. The strains utilized during the present study originated from widely separated localities in India, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabaru, Malaysia and Chian Mai, Thailand. The presence of heterosis in many interpopulation crosses is evident from the results which show that the inversion heterozygotes formed by chromosomes coming from distant populations exhibit heterosis. On the other hand, heterosis is absent in two intrapopulation crosses. Thus the present results provide evidence that heterozygosis for many genes and gene complexes does produce high fitness without previous selectional coadaptation.

Notes: Summary Mitochondrial DNA has been isolated from paired lines of pearl millet maintainer and cytoplasmic male sterile plants. Evaluation of the DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis shows that good quality DNA of high molecular weight can be obtained from mitochondria of both maintainer and male sterile pearl millet.

Notes: Summary The width of a thin plastic annular zone formed during the deformation of a pennyshaped crack in a transversely isotropic layer of an ideal elasto-plastic material is determined. Considered are the cases where the penny-shaped crack is extended by normal stresses and by torsional stresses. The faces of the layer are shear free and deformation of the plastic zone around the penny-shaped crack occurs according to the Dugdale hypothesis. For each case, the solution of the problem is reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Iterative solutions are obtained for small values of the parameters and numerical results for the width of the plastic zone are determined. Graphical results showing the effect of transverse isotropy upon the width of the plastic zone are also presented.
