Notes: The translational diffusion process of methyl red dissolved in poly(caprolactone) diol has been investigated as a function of temperature, using the laser induced holographic grating relaxation technique. The tracer diffusion coefficients of methyl red in trans and cis forms are found to follow the WLF type of temperature dependence with the WLF coefficients identical to that associated with the shear modulus of the polymer host. The cis isomer of methyl red although about 8% smaller in size diffuses about three times slower than the trans isomer. This is interpreted as due to a stronger interaction between the cis isomer and the polymer host.

Notes: A new hybrid structure for two-dimensional surface-emitting diode laser arrays has been demonstrated. Each hybrid array consists of linear arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs lasers, with conventional cleaved end facets, that are mounted in grooves etched in a Si substrate. The etched grooves have flat bottoms and 45° sidewalls that are coated with a highly reflecting Cr/Au layer. A hybrid array with three 4-mm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs linear laser arrays has been fabricated and tested. Approximately 10 W of peak power perpendicular to the array surface was obtained from each of the linear arrays for 11–12 A of pulsed current per array. The measured differential quantum efficiencies were 65–70%, indicating that the 45° metallized sidewalls deflect by 90° essentially all of the light emitted from the laser facets. The new approach allows for the use of integral Si heat sinks and should prove useful for fabricating large, high-power, two-dimensional laser arrays in any material system.

Notes: A new method has been developed for compositional mixing of heterostructures by ion bombardment at elevated temperatures. Complete mixing of a 1-μm-thick GaAs/AlGaAs 40-period multiple quantum well layer has been achieved by bombardment with 380 keV Ne+ ions for 1 h with the sample at 700 °C. This temperature is much lower than the annealing temperatures used in other vacancy-enhanced disordering techniques, and even lower temperatures and shorter durations should be possible. Compositional disordering is verified by sputter-profile Auger electron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Complete mixing is also demonstrated by optical transmission spectra of the disordered material, which exhibit the same band edge as a uniform alloy with the average aluminum mole fraction of the multiple quantum well layer.

Notes: Epitaxial layers of CdTe were grown on CdTe and InSb substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using dimethylcadmium and dimethyltelluride as alkyl sources. Specular CdTe layers were grown on InSb at temperatures between 350 and 375 °C with serious out-diffusion of In from substrates. Dimethyltelluride is the controlling species of this growth system. Typical growth rates were 4 to 7 μm/h. Low-temperature photoluminescent measurements revealed the superior quality of epitaxial layers grown on CdTe substrates. The bound-exciton emission at 1.590 eV and the band-edge emission at 1.548 eV are the dominant peaks. Homostructure CdTe epitaxial layers grown between 330 and 410 °C possess the best surface morphology. Hole concentrations in the 1013-cm−3 range and a carrier mobility over 100 cm2/V sec were observed in these layers at 77 K. The highest hole mobility is 555 cm2/V sec in the sample grown at 400 °C. Layers grown outside this range show n-type conductivity with deteriorated electron mobilities and photoluminescent spectra.

Notes: A novel approach to form low threshold laser structures, similar to existing mass-transported lasers but without the second regrowth step, is described. The laser has comparable performance in threshold current and quantum efficiency to more conventional buried heterostructure lasers made with a two-step process. Because of the simplicity in fabrication and its reduced parasitic capacitance it has the potential to be low cost and to have high modulation bandwidth.

Notes: The technique of determining the longitudinal compliance over a wide dynamic range (from 10−1 to 106 Hz) using Rayleigh–Brillouin scattering has been studied. The method of computing the longitudinal compliance spectrum from the time correlation of density fluctuations of poly(vinyl acetate), as determined by the photon correlation spectroscopic technique, is illustrated.

Notes: We discuss two approaches to obtain neutron detectors of very high temporal resolution. In the first approach, a uranium-coated cathode is used in a streak tube configuration. Secondary electrons accompanying the fission fragments from a neutron-uranium reaction are accelerated, focused through a pinhole, and streaked. Calculations show that 20-ps time resolution can be obtained. In the second approach, a uranium-coated cathode is integrated into a transmission line. State-of-the-art technology indicates that a time resolution of 20 ps can be obtained by gating the cathode with a fast electric pulse.

Notes: We present the design and construction of a sensitive pinhole camera for imaging suprathermal x rays. Our device is a pinhole camera consisting of four filtered pinholes and microchannel-plate electron multiplier for x-ray detection and signal amplification. We report successful imaging of 20-, 45-, 70-, and 100-keV x-ray emissions from the fusion targets at our Novette laser facility. Such imaging reveals features of the transport of hot electrons and provides views deep inside the target.

Notes: The fluid flow outside of a stretching cylinder is studied. The problem is governed by a third-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation that leads to exact similarity solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations. Because of algebraic decay, an exponential transform is used to facilitate numerical integration. Asymptotic solutions for large Reynolds numbers compare well with numerical results. The heat transfer is determined.
