Notes: The effects of intraperitoneal injection of monoclonal anti-rat T-lymphocyte antibodies were evaluated immunohistochemically and functionally in normal rats and in rats with experimental allergic neuritis. In the normal animals a single injection of OX8 antibodies, reactive with suppressor/cytotoxic T cells, completely eliminated OX8-reactive cells from peripheral lymphoid organs and from circulation, whereas the ‘pan’ T-cell-reactive W3/13 antibodies and the helper T-cell-reactive W3/25 antibodies only caused a partial elimination of their respective target cells. Injection of the W3/13 and W3/25 antibodies but not of OX8 antibodies led to a diminished responsiveness to allogeneic stimulation in vitro for spleen cells obtained from the treated rats, whereas the OX8 injection caused a complete elimination of the in vitro cytotoxic response to allogeneic cells in the mixed lymphocyte reaction-activated spleen cell population. When Lewis rats were injected with peripheral nerve myelin and Freund's adjuvant for the induction of EAN, treatment with W3/13 antibodies completely prevented the onset of disease, whereas treatment with the OX8 antibodies exaggerated the disease symptoms.

Notes: Abstract Subduction induced compressional stress, lateral displacement faults probably linked to the NW extension of the Polochic-Motagua fault system, and local magma emplacement create a complex geological setting for the El Chichon volcano. Gravity analysis reveals that the principal structures in the area correspond to synclines and anticlines. Downward continuation of the gravity field suggests the presence of magma emplacement SE of the volcano. This magmatic emplacement appears to be the principal cause of the truncation of the syncline in which the volcano lies. Analyses of earthquakes occurring after eruptions show that the vertical distribution of events is confined to a roughly cylindrical zone which correlates well with the region of magmatic emplacement inferred from the gravity analysis. Even though more than 350 km separate the volcano from the Middle American trench, the compressional stress regime reported for the area may correlate with subduction stress (N30°E). However, the strike direction for the principal faults in the zone, N60°W, permits us to postulate that the NW extension of the Polochic-Motagua fault system is implicated in the local tectonics of the El Chichon area.

Notes: Doubly charged ion mass spectra have been obtained for 11 organophosphorus compounds. Methane has been used as a target gas to increase the probability of single electron transfer collisions in the first field-free region of an Hitachi RMU-7L mass spectrometer. In general, the spectra of organophosphorus compounds do not exhibit molecular ions but are dominated by fragment ions, many of which must be formed by rearrangement processes. A geometry-optimized self-consistent field molecular orbital method has been employed to compute energies and structural parameters for prominent ions. In addition, a diabatic curve crossing model has been used to examine the single electron transfer reactions responsible for intense ions in the doubly charged ion mass spectra. Appearance energies measured for ions prominent in the 2E spectra of organophosphorus compounds have ranged from 23 to 38 eV.

Notes: The influence of the collision gas on doubly charged ion mass spectra of a selected number of hydrocarbons has been examined. Relative abundances of various product ions in 2E spectra, resulting from charge exchange collisions of doubly charged hydrocarbon ions, do not vary drastically as the collision gas is varied. However, the absolute intensities of these doubly charged ion mass spectra increase significantly when the collision gas is changed from argon to methane to isobutane. Tbese observations are rationalized in terms of a multichannel diabatic curve crossing model.
