Notes: Design considerations and experimental results are described for a charge exchange neutral particle mass and energy analyzer for JT-60, which analyzes H, D, and He simultaneously up to a maximum energy of 110 keV. The analyzer has separately a 180° deflection magnet for momentum analysis and an electrostatic deflector for mass analysis. The way to control the effect of the electric fringe fields in order to expand the detectable energy range is studied by numerical simulation. The deflector is then designed, made of two triangular plates and three additional electrodes for the control of the fringe fields. The effect of the deflector is demonstrated experimentally. Energy and mass resolution and the relation between the incident ion energy and the magnetic field strength are measured. The results of the calibration experiments agree with the designed value.

Notes: Serum amyloid P component (SAP) is present not only in all types of cutaneous amyloidosis, but also in the normal dermal clastic fibers as well as abnormal elastic-fibers, such as clastotic degeneration of clastic fibers in actinic keratosis. It was previously postulated that the colloid substance in colloid milium is a final degeneration stage of actinic clastosis. In a lesion of colloid milium SAP was intensely positive with an indirect iinmuiiofluorescence method using rabbit antiserum to human SAP. Electron microscopy of the colloid lesion revealed components of normal elastic fibers as well as those of actinic elastoid as seen in actinic clastosis. It is concluded that the colloid substance derives, at least in major part, from elastic fibers through actinic degeneration.

Notes: A black baby, born al full term of a normal healthy mother, showed multiple erosions and ulcers. No history of skin diseases was known in the family. A skin biopsy taken shortly after birth from an arm lesion showed subepidermal edema and cavity formation. Electron microscopy showed clumping of microfibrils and anchoring fibril-like fibers at the dermo-epidermal junction. In more severely affected areas, absence of anchoring fibrils and collagenolysis were found and the diagnosis of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa was made. Two weeks later, the lesions healed without leaving scars and a second biopsy from the chest area revealed typical histopathology of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis.

Notes: The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the effects of unilateral masseter muscle pain on the jaw-jerk reflex. The latency and peak-to-peak amplitude of bilateral electromyographic activity recorded at the masseter muscles during the jaw-jerk reflex were measured in 18 patients with craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) with strictly unilateral masseter pain or tenderness and 10 control subjects using a computerized recording and analysis system. The reflex was elicited, at the mandibular rest position, by tapping the centre of the chin downwards with a reflex hammer incorporating a microswitch that triggered the sweep of the recording apparatus upon contact with the chin. In the CMD group, the jaw-jerk latency on the affected side (6·89±0·98 ms) was significantly shorter (P〈0·01) than that on the unaffected side (7·59±0·92 ms). In the control group, there was no difference between the jaw-jerk latencies on the right (7·06±0·64 ms) and the left (7·08±0·65 ms) sides. The range of side asymmetry for jaw-jerk latencies in the CMD group was greater than that in the control group. In six patients, the latency difference exceeded 1 ms. The asymmetry of latency of the jaw-jerk reflex was thought to be due to facilitation on the side with masseter pain or tenderness. This facilitation on the ipsilateral side might be produced by enhanced gamma drive induced by sustained nociceptive stimulation. Such effects may be related with clinically derived concepts regarding such muscle dysfunction as myospastic activity or trigger points.

Notes: The presence of a tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor in the epidermis was investigated. A partially purified tissue plasminogen activator from a Bowes melanoma cell line medium was used as a tissue plasminogen activator. Extracts of epidermis dissolved in a 10 mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.0, were found to contain a tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor. The same extracts also contained a urokinase inhibitor. It is not clear whether these inhibitors are the same. This study is the first to show the existence of a tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor in the epidermis.

Notes: Summary Human peripheral-blood leukocytes (PBLs) were found to form rosettes with cultured human epidermal cells or a mouse epidermal cell line (Pam cells), but not with fibroblasts, when preincubated with heat-inactivated sera from patients with pemphigus vulgaris. Increased rosette formation was observed, however, when untreated sera were used for passive sensitization. Complement was not required for this reaction, because purified IgG fractions from a protein-A/Sepharose column retained the ability to induce rosette formation. Blocking experiments with α-methylmannoside suggested that a carbohydrate moiety is involved in the binding of sensitized cells to epidermal cells. Thus, human PBLs can adhere to cultured mouse epidermal cells in the presence of PV IgG antibodies.

Notes: Abstract Two starfishes, “togemomijigai” Astropecten polyacanthus and “momijigai” A. scoparius were collected from the Seto Inland Sea in October 1983 through November 1984, and assayed for toxicity by the standard method for tetrodotoxin (TTX). Most of the 54 A. polyacanthus specimens assayed were toxic, with the highest toxicity score being 520 mouse units (MU) g-1. All seven A. scoparius were toxic, with the highest score being 46 MU g-1. The toxin from A. polyacanthus was purified by a method which consisted mainly of activated charcoal treatment, and chromatography on CM-Sephadex C-25 and Bio-Rex 70 columns. The purified starfish toxin showed a specific toxicity of 4 700 MU mg-1, a value which was almost comparable to that of authentic TTX. From the thin-layer chromatographic and electrophoretic behavior, along with 1H-NMR spectrum, A. polyacanthus toxin was identified as TTX.
